I got my ring and thought it was huge (as did he). I had trouble with it for the first couple of weeks with hitting it on everything and then shinkage happened. About a month after I got it, the ring seemed too small (I''m sure I''m the b1tch and the odd person out with how quickly it set-in for me). I think it didn''t help that in my small university town the average rock was still twice the size of mine...not to mention what they are like once you step outside of my university!!

How long did it take for shrinkage to set in for you, if it happened at all?

Oh boy

Do a search on this NASTY phenomenon which is exclusive to most diamond buyers

You are not alone, many have walked in your shoes and will do so in future!

Tips to combat DSS include buying a bigger rock

, or by putting it away for a few days. When you wear it again it looks huge! Fear not, DSS is quite normal in the PS world, it is evil but nothing to worry about! I think the quickest case of shrinkage I have heard of was a couple of days, it can strike fast. I think average is a couple of weeks. We need to compile records and stats I think...

I''m hoping to compile records and stats from this thread

Let the research begin!!

Larissa, I got a 3.5C round whopper on my wedding ring and shrinkage set in within 3 weeks . . . . . and I have a size 4.25 finger. Sick, huh?
When I glimpse my ring in the mirror, it looks way bigger to me, so whenever I feel DSS setting in, I just take a look in the mirror and get a firm reminder that it''s really not "small." Plus, I try to remind myself that my ring looks more like a 4+ carat on my slim finger. Yes, DSS is truly an illness. I guess we are lucky to be in a position to suffer from it, yes?

When I got married (16 years ago) I got a 1.53 carat round. I was 24. I always loved diamonds but never really thought about size and shape. I wore it for ten years and decided I wanted everything to be different, metal, setting, size, shape. My dh went to Tiffanys and got me an emerald cut three stone, with the center stone three carats and one carat on each side. The quality was E vvs and I really thought this ring would be it for me. Then I was turning 40 and just though, I want something really big. We went back to Tiffany''s and I got a 9.22 carat emerald and set it with baguettes in platinum. It is vs and G. To be honest. I could go bigger without a problem even though I LOVE my ring and would never mention THAT to my husband, he would flip. I have size 6 or so fingers.

Warning: Spending a lot of time here on Pricescope induces shrinkage.

This thing with the mirror is a weird fact. After I had my ring a little it began to look small (it is 2.27ct). Oh bummer. Then I sometimes would look at it on my hand in the mirror and it did look much bigger! An undelicious subconscious thought came to me: I bet if I saw my ring on another girl''s hand I would think, "Oh she has a big ring...." Pretty sick, huh?!?

I think the more time I spend on pricescope the smaller my diamond looks...don''t tell my fi that! I think DSS set in for me after a few months. I have a .74 radiant on a 4.5 finger and it actually looks pretty larger on my hand. Everyone thinks it''s about the right size for me, but now that i''ve had it for a while I''m thinking 1.5 carats might be about right LOL.

I''ve told my fi not to let me go over 2 carats untill I''m an old lady though. I don''t want to let DSS control my life, and we both agree that the upgrades will stop at some point. Two carats for me is still a large stone to the majority of people even in nicer neighborhoods, this will be a good stopping point for me.

Wearing it in front of the mirror makes me think my diamond is bigger. I think looking straight down at it makes it look smaller...who knows.

If it makes any of you feel better, it doesn''t just happen from looking at honkers on here. It hit my 15 year old son before it hit me, lol. And as far as I know, he''s not cruising this forum.

It was probably about 2 months after I got it that he said out of the blue, it doesn''t look as big as it used to. I didn''t see it for maybe another month. And it''s not all the time. The thing I remember though is, only those who see it on a constant basis will notice, it still looks big to everyone else...

And it doesn''t bother me, I''m not a size girl anyway.

My married friends tell me women loose common sense when they get married. So, you might be loosing it and thinking your diamond is smaller, when in fact it's still the same size.

Do you find yourself buying clothes you only wear once? Or you can’t parallel park as well as you use too? Or you own 100 pairs of shoes and say you don't have enough?

As long as parts of my body don't appear smaller to my future wife - I'm okay with it.

I got my upgrade about 6 years ago and no shrinkage has set in. I am surprised at this but guess I''m in the minority around here.

OMG, you are too funny!!

I got shrinkage with my original engagement ring right after we got married (I remember thinking when I first saw the ring--man that is HUGE!!! LOL... ). I didn't have my oval long enough for shrinkage to set in (only six months?) but I do have to go stand in front of the mirror with my round every now and then. I also have a girlfriend in the office who likes to try it on so it helps to see it on her hand several times a week. But still... it shrank... and it happened in no time at all...
39.gif

A couple of weeks? Sounds about right... But I got exactly what I wanted, it''s really a big ring according to local standards and my FI even busted his budget for it, so it doesn''t mean I''m not happy with my ring! And it does look bigger in the mirror, that helps!

Nothinhg sarcastic meant, let me assure you. I think it''s absolute fantastic you have a rock that size!!!!! Perhaps the devil, was just my jealousy...........

I only ask because I am someone who thinks, where diamonds are concerned, there is really no size I would not consider! (which thrills my dh to no end, but he is getting used to it!) I know not everyone agrees, but I am not shy about my addiction...

I may be in the minority...but I haven't suffered shrinkage yet! My stone is a 1.58 carat asscher with a halo (see my avatar) - I thought it was perfect when I got it and still think it is perfect today...

Edited to add that I got my ering in December of '05.

No... you aren''t... it set in for me before I even bought it LOL I came here thinking 2/3 to 3/4 carat oval... then thought no, I''ll do one carat... then it was one plus change, then one and a half... the budget kept getting bigger and bigger... I literally multiplied my initial budget by at least 4x and added 2 carats to my initial plan LOL I guess in a way I''m glad it "shrunk" *before* I bought it, but regardless, you''re not alone and certainly that''s not the quickest LOL

yeah I was holding a 2.4 carat against my finger today and I said, "Does it look too small?" LOL! I meant it too! Oy, this place is bad! Mine is only 2.7 but because it''s long my eye can fool me into thinking, hey, it''s almost a centimeter so shaddup!!

I need to get over my shyness... I keep just staring at my stone and I cup my hand so no one can see what I''m looking at LOL

Okay, I have had a 1 ct. stone for 29 years. We were looking for a new stone for the next anniversary. I had in my mind that 1.3-1.5 would be nice. I concentrated on trying to find a 1.4 round. But after being on PS for a few months, I did get DSS and my stone is 1.63! It came today and it looks really BIG to me!
30.gif
Even if it does shrink, I probably will never upgrade, because it''s still larger than almost everybody I know, so I''d be really self-conscious to wear larger than this one. So I honestly think I found the perfect size for me! (But if Lisa''s husband wants to send me the twin to her ring, I am suuuuure I can adapt!)

It''s just the stone unset! So there were the orinigal pictures of it on that thread with the 1.37 H when I was first deciding. I sent both back thinking I''d have GOG set it, but I never found a setting in their selection. The big news now is that they are about to carry both Tacori and Ritani, so I imagine I could have found something if it had been a little sooner! My daughter is back at college with the camera I know how to work, and my husband doesn''t know if there''s a macro lens on the little Fujifilm camera. I am trying to order a particular Canon camera, but it''s out of stock at NewEgg and Amazon, so I may be out of luck in regard to bare stone pictures.
8.gif
Thanks for asking, though!

I know it''s just the stone, but when has that stopped anybody?
9.gif
Hope you get your camera soon!

Shrinkage increased over the years for my original .33 rb. in yellow gold w/ baguettes, as I gained 40 lbs!! When we upgraded to my 1.15 EC about a year ago I thought it looked huge, and certainly big for the area we live in......but....I now think a 1.75 carat would be the perfect size on my 6.5 size finger!

Cehra, I sometimes catch myself staring and think, wow, how pretty...other times I think I have gotten so used to seeing it on the finger landscape that it just seems normal. Must say where I live there are girls with even larger (but not necessarily nicer than mine) rings, so it is not as if I am in the minority! But still, as much as I loved jewelry, I never thought about having a stone like this, so I know I am lucky. Poor hubby wishes that I was NOT into bling but sad to say too late for him now!

today was my kinderboys first day and one of the moms there had a fairly good sized rock, I''d say 1.5 or so... and it was in a pretty robust setting wtih other diamonds around (not a 3 stone) ANYWAY she kept putting her hand over her mouth and leaving it there almost like she was showing it off and I was wondering if I''d ever catch myself doing that or if I''d go the opposite direction and always avoid showing it off lol I know I''m going to get caught staring at it... I mean my gosh, it is just so fantastic to watch LOL The two big facets (tweedledee and tweedledumb lol) are entertaining in any light... I''m going to take some moonshots tonight when it gets dark... hehehe... and when it''s all dark and diffused and there isn''t an actual light source it just looks solid white not quite oval, not quite square... oops I''m talking about it again! I don''t think I''ll get shrinkage with this stone because now that I''ve allowed myself to fall in love I really don''t think anything else will ever compare and I could search a very long time for another stone like this. I am getting the bug to have MORE diamonds though! I need a pendant and a RHR (though for that I might just get into the gemstone craze lol) and what else... a bracelet... better studs... hehehehehehe....
