It was fourteen years for me. I went bigger and switched to white gold. I have no desire to ever switch my diamond but I could see wanting new setting down the road at some point. When we bought my first er we had no idea what we were doing and bought an I1 with a very visible inclusion. After awhile it started to bother me. I love my rings now

I initally got engaged with a 2ct princess stone on an eternity band but then thanks to PS I started to realize the allure of a well cut RB and the fire etc..that comes with an RB don''t get me wrong my princess was awesome as are a ton of other princess stones on PS but I also began to worry that I would chip a corner as corners on princess stones tend to be vulnerable to being broken/chipped...

SO I went back to WF and since they have an upgrade policy I upgraded and not by much I got a 2ct ish ACA RB and I was happy, happy!
It was really neat how although both my stones were in the same size range my RB faces up quite a bit bigger which I really liked and of course the performance of my stone blew me away. I kept the same setting.

But I must admit and I''m not even married yet that from time to time I do entertain the thought of upgrading to a bigger stone...I think it is a combination of being on PS but also a nasty incident I had with FSIL she never congratulated me when FI and I got engaged and as soon as she saw my ring she said Oh 2ct when you said it was 2ct I was thinking it would be MUCH BIGGER than this, this looks just like mine (her center stone is a .70 princess) but she has always been mean to me...

I''d like to get to 3ct by the time we are married 5 yrs here''s hoping!
11.gif
It''s obvious that she is green with jealousy and I bet because you are also better looking than she is.
11.gif
I just so hate snotty people. Only in her dream that a 0.70ct princess cut looks as big as a 2ct RB. Even a 2ct princess don''t look as big as 2ct RB. Did she use her eyes to look?
20.gif

Did you smack her head? Need help?
31.gif

I''m not even married yet (
4.gif
) but I''d like to say I''m in the "no upgrade" camp- Not for any real reason besides I''m an absolute sentimental sap. And, well, I love my ring!!
30.gif
30.gif
And I love the thought that FI put into it. If the following wasn''t true, then, yeah, idk, maybe I''d think of changing it within 5 years.

Now... as for right-hand sparklies... You better believe that I dream of those 10-20 years down the road. But I''ll gladly save, design & buy ''em myself.

I was a little crazed about my E-ring before/immediately after I got it. It is set EXACTLY how I dreamed, and bigger than I thought. BUT it was a bit more costly than it needed to be, and the cut isn''t H/A, ideal, or even ''very good.'' FI was hesitant to tell me these things and didn''t want me to know that my ring wasn''t "perfect."

:sigh: But that, in and of itself, makes me love the ring more. Because in its own way, it''s 110% perfect, you know? Its sort of the one diamond that can get away without being "statistically" perfect. I''ll save my type-A, virgo tendencies for left-hand pet projects down the line, and love my e-ring for what it is

Sorry for sissy-sappy-emo-hour, everyone

PS *can* be bad for the newly-engaged... Its so much more important to live in the moment after your engagement! But it is definitely a fabulous resource before you buy an e-diamond, when you want to upgrade, or when you want to design any other piece of diamond jewelry.

hmmm....I am pretty practical in nature. When I knew i was going to get engaged I thought about what i would like...i originally thought i would like a three stone sapphire ring and an eternity band for my wedding band to go with it (ideally). I knew i would NOT be getting both, so I chose which one I would be most happy wearing day in and day out, and I chose the eternity band. I'm not married, but so far I haven't regretted it, and I don't think I will - I figure I can always add on to it without having to upgrade it
9.gif

I got my first upgrade after 20 years of marriage (but I did get my little mercedes as well) so I think I did well. I always said I would love a 1ct and then I would be satisfied. Guess what happened? I discovered pricescope and look at all the beautiful rings everyone has. The possibilities are endless. I think if I were to upgrade, it would only be one more time and I would love a 2 to 2.4ct. Currently I am wearing my 1.15ct ideal rb.

Even before I became aware of pricescope I always had a passion for diamonds, and I still love my original ering of 0.51ct

It won''t happen overnight, but it will happen

MMT you mentioned switching to white gold, that is what I am thinking of doing as well. Need a change, is that why you did it too?

I am a virgo too and I think I know what you mean by a side pet project. I constantly look for one, not knowing that it is actually a virgo tendencies.

joelly I just saw your reply...you are so sweet to be supportive of me. I hate snotty people too especially when they are like that for no reason...and yeah hoping to not sound immature but a .70ct princess especially a non ideal one does not look close to the size of an ideal 2ct RB...she''s a real mean girl with little class and no I didn''t smack her in the head I''m trying really hard to just co-exist with her in peace she is part of my extended family after all...sigh I wish things were diff though...but your reply makes me laugh and also plot hee hee so thanks!

My DH is definitely in the no upgrade camp. Between the two of us, he is the more sentimental one. He did say that if there is a need to, he''ll get another ring.

I am a very practical person and never really dreamt of marriage and definitely not an engagement ring. DH is a very frugal person and when we were talking about marriage, I didn''t have any expectations on the ring. When he told me the ring budget, I have to negotiate DOWN as I didn''t think that it was practical (that was however, before I chanced upon PS). Everyone who knows him well were shocked that he bought me such a nice ring! On the other hand, I am also a "never say never" person.
11.gif
I am really content with what I have for many years to come.

Totally agree with PilsnPinkysMom on PS "can" be bad.... It has a wealth of information and the folks here are just wonderful and helpful... but it''s hard to resist when all the beautiful pieces popping up so often and there are definitely many "enablers" here and the vendors recommended here are just great! I know I will be back to "normal" once I stop visiting PS but I just can''t help it. It''s an obsession. Don''t think it "can" be bad for JUST newly engaged though.

We will be married nine years this year and going to renew our vows in Vegas next summer for our 10 years. My husband and I have been together since high school (16 years this year) I had thought about upgrading just after we got married because two people who I thought were my friends made me feel bad about my ring. Two friends (one male and one female) comment on how small my ring was from my husband -the male was a good friend and told my husband at my birthday party that if he had married me ( and I knew he had wanted to for quite some time) before my wedding that he had a thing for me) he would have bought me a much larger diamond ring, that I deserved better. This was two months after we were marriend. I disolved that relationship with this male friend. My poor husband was so upset about it because this guy had made such a big deal about my ring infront of all of our friends at the club that night.

The girl was actually my made of honour who got engaged just before my wedding. Her fiancee took her to Cuba and proposed with a 1 ct diamond solitaire that did not sparkle in any light (not even spot lights) and was cloudy (I could see a variety of black inclusions from the top of the diamond), but she just kept telling me that my 5 stone trelllis from Birks (center stone .33 but the entire ring was a total of .90ctw) was tiny and that my husband didn''t spend enough on my ring. Her husband supposed spend over $10,000 on the ring ( I am pretty sure that he did not, he bought a cheap diamond with a lot of inclusions and said that he spent that much money.) Mine looked bigger than hers because it was such a fire ball-great cut diamonds. She and I are not friends anymore.

Right now I am having a 10 year anniversary ring made. I posted CAD''s a week ago from the Natural Sapphire Company-it is an inspiration of MissRocks e ring. Mine is a 1.14 ctw Pink sapphire cushion with two half moon diamonds surrounded by diamond halo. I will also be getting matching band closer to the anniversary and we will be exchanging new rings, but I am keeping my original e ring and bands. They are yellow gold so I will wear them when I wear my yellow gold and my new 10 year upgrade when I want to wear all my white gold.

I haven''t gotten my ring yet, but we just bought the setting... And we are going to get an old mine cut diamond to go in the setting. I am hoping for a 1.5 ct. diamond, but even if it''s smaller, I am pretty sure I will never upgrade because of how unique the whole thing will be together. I posted the setting in another thread recently...

Down the line, I KNOW I am one day going to have a ring similar to Lovey LOVELY Leon halo''ed asscher...

But I won''t ever get rid of my original e-ring with all the work we have put into it already!

Well I'm almost an opposite situation.

My original e-ring was a 3ct, SI, square emerald cut ruby in a lab diamond setting (all we could afford). When we'd been engaged for about a year, I started my Dip. Gem, I had my lecturer check the stone for me as a line had appeared after smacking my hand in the car.

The lecturer explained that the stone had been treated and had a pre-existing fracture that had been made worse so I'm having it set in a bezel pendant.

After we had gotten engaged, many family members had commented that my ring was ostentatious and were quite rude. So when it came to this, I tossed up downsizing!

But in the end, we purchsed a LOGR setting - which I was absolutely thrilled with. And we purchased the stone separately, a 2.08ct, VSI, cushion cut ruby.
I am so happy with the ring I have no words.

So it was a downgrade in size but a big overall upgrade!

i''ve been engaged almost two years, still not married and my third setting is in the works, same diamond tho, my FI proposed with just a diamond, so i know it''s something i''ll never change, i''m hoping this third setting is the last one

I upgraded twice already, once at 5 years, once at 9 years. :) My original e-ring was only 1/4 ct so I think I was pretty good wearing that for years. The funny thing is it wasn''t considered small at all in DH''s family. I think his mom, sister and other female relatives all have small diamonds. Well we''re all engaged very young and married our first boyfriend so small diamonds are expected.

My parents are Americans and were shocked about how small it looked. They offered to give us some extra cash to upgrade it right away. Talk about rude! We just saw DH''s youngest sister recently. She''s just engaged. Honestly I was very surprised to see her ring. I forgot how tiny small diamonds are. :) I really thought she''d get a bigger one as her guy is American and much older. But I was good and kept my thoughts to myself. I know she''s not a jewelry person so it''s very likely that she insisted on getting something small. :)

I''m embarrassed to say, the ring is not yet on my finger and I''m already thinking about upgrading. Of course, not right away but I keep asking myself, hmmm...how long is an appropriate amount of time before you upgrade?
11.gif
Of course, I''m very sentimental so once it''s on my finger, I doubt I''ll ever want to change it. But you never know! It''s one of the downsides to this website...the ring envy! lol

I have not seriously thought about upgrading yet, though I do daydream

I got engaged about 4 years ago now; we'll probably get THE ring at some point after I have finished my residency. For now, I am working on my color stones collection

Note- I will be keeping my original ring intact. THE ring will be an addition to the collection

Here's a quick pic - it look darker IRL, unfortunately the best light I had was in the bathroom!

I'll post some more in the Engagement Ring Folder.
