Hello again! In buying a cushion, do I have to get ASET images and all that stuff? Where do I go? Who has these tests, does it come with a GIA cert?? I don't want to buy online. Any info appreciated. Can I just go by the look of the stone in person and also the GIA cert stats???

FYI I want a slightly elongated antique cushion cut - but new, not antique.

ASET images help you determine light performance of diamonds. Unless you find a cushion cut diamond with a 0 or 1 in light performance, you need to see ASET images. GIA certificates don't tell you much. If you want to buy in person, GOG, IDJ, JA and ERD can provide you with ASET images. I don't know much about jewelers that can provide you with ASET images outside of NY. Where are you located?

HI Iluvdiamonds

As far as if you need an ASET- unless one knows what to look for in an ASET, I don't know that it's a lot of help to any given consumer- especially if you can see the diamond with your own two eyes.
About reading ASET: you'd need to have looked at diamonds in real life that have the type of optical performane you love, then correlate it to an ASET image to know what to look for in subsequent diamonds.
Seems more simple for a consumer to use their eyes of possible
There are other jewelers besides the ones that Sakuracherry mentioned that provide ASET- such as us. It's highly doubtful that you'll find the device in a retail jeweler- and GIA does not provide ASET images

Most AGS member stores are at least passingly familiar with ASET and some of them are both quite good at it and have viewers in the showroom for you to use. You can look up members nearby on the AGS website at www.ags.org..

If you are buying online, you need one IMO unless you get a really good video and a return policy. If you are shopping in person, it depends on how educated your eyes are.

Unless you know how to read the ASET results yourself, having the ASET is useless. Ditto with seeing the cushion in person - unless your eyes are trained to differentiate what is well cut and what is not, everything is likely to look great to you, especially under jewellery store lights. The GIA memo tells you nothing about the stone's light performance.
