How heavy is TOO heavy?

Heehee! Now that I have your attention this is about daily wear earrings.

I go through phases of wearing the same earring 24/7 for weeks in a row. I have earrings that weigh 2.0 grams each and I worry about overstretching my earlobes.

Has anyone ever come across any litterature or personal experience about maximum weight the earlobe piercing can take on a regular basis before stretch damage occurs?

Another thing is, I tend to prefer wearing small 1" diameter or less hoops as they don't poke me while I sleep... But to me, 2.0 grams seems heavy so I try to take them off at bedtime, which I prefer not to bother doing...

Your input please! TIA!

Switch out your earrings more often or give your piercings a rest, period. Everyone’s skin is different and age among other factors can influence “sag.”
Im sure you can google “gauged ears” to find out exact weights and measurements. Like Kenny posted above, which looks like a hole made over time by an ear gauge/progressively larger sizes

I’ve worn earrings nearly daily for the past thirty years. For regular all-day wear I keep weight as low as possible - 1.5-2g each or under. I also ask for 1mm posts or 18 gauge wire, on the premise that the slightly-larger-than-usual diameter will prevent earrings from knifing down the lobe and elongating the piercing.

Despite that, in the months before Covid I noticed that my left piercing in particular seemed stretched more than it should be... I’d actually started to look at surgical restoration options... Then Covid spread, and with everyone working from home my already-casual workplace became even more so, and I took the earrings out and left them out. After four months of not wearing earrings, my 1mm/18gauge posts and hooks won’t fit. In either ear. I think I’d rip something trying to force them through :oops2: My pearl studs have 0.65mm posts, and those go through no trouble. My baby bezels have 0.8mm posts, and I can work those through with some wiggling and an hour or so of sore earlobe afterward.

On the one hand - how marvellous that thirty year old piercings can recover to such an extent after only a few months of rest!! And I plan to use BlingDots to preserve the win!! On the other - do I now need to switch posts and hooks out on - I don’t even want to say how many pairs!?

we need a piercing party
ill bring the frozen peas :mrgreen2:

i took my earings out when i got sick two years ago and it was a horrible virus that took a couple of months to feel better and i never put them back in

I know this answer for me. I can tolerate up to 2.5 grams per ear but prefer 2 grams or less if at all possible. I have had to turn down earrings I adored because they are simply to heavy for my earlobes. If one is not comfortable then one will not wear or enjoy the earrings IMO.

@fiona00004 I absolutely ADORE earrings. they truly were my first jewelry loves. for a long time all i cared about and wanted were earrings. my first fine jewelry gifted to me by loved ones and later on purchased by me were always earrings. I could have no other jewelry on but without earrings i feel undressed and ill prepared for the day. BUT i am very sensitive to weight on my ears. I can't wear heavy earrings. Studs with minimal of metal or a diamond or 2 on french hooks is about all i can tolerate or want to wear. im guessing 1 gram (without taking out the kitchen scale)

I noticed when I wear studs, they tend to pull forwards and downwards.
Maybe I need to invest in those bling dots too.

But I have small ear lobes. I think 2 grams each ear is my maximum tolerance. I even have a pair of solid gold earrings that I am going to ask my jeweler to hollow out some more to make them lighter...the weight is what stops me from wearing them as they are slightly over 2g. 15985402506384682918315445294293.jpg15985403087544728234246110448082.jpg
These 2 are my heaviest earrings at 2 grams each...the gold hoops just a hair over 2g

Your post made me super curious so I went and weighed my hoops.

A whopping 4g for one hoop.

I'll weigh my Jade earrings tomorrow and see how heavy they are.

I have super fat Buddha lobes though so they don't stretch.
