Hi

How hard is it to find a 2.5 - 3 carat stone that would fall under both GIA ex and AGS IDEAL guidelines?

Depends on the required color/clarity and budget...

It's easy.
Near the top of this screen I clicked on the tab labeled, Resources.
Then I selected Diamond Search.

I entered:
2.5 - 3 carat
Excellent cut
ALL colors
ALL clarities

It found 68 stones all with HCA scores under 2.0.
They were priced from $16,648 for a 2.53 J SI2 to $87,073 for a 2.72 E VVS2.

If you pick one of these the next step is to get an Idealscope pic and compare it to this chart.

Bear in mind that HCA <2 does not equal diamonds that fall in the GIA X/AGS Ideal zenith. :read:

True dat.

Rhino, I have a question.
The HCA graph has two areas, defined by white lines.
The large dashed one is GIA, and the smaller solid line is AGS's range.

In addition to the HCA score the tool also puts an X in on the chart for where the diamond falls.
If it falls in the area common to both the GIA and the AGS range would it not qualify as "the GIA X/AGS Ideal zenith"?

Here's an example:
