Been reading a lot of the post on this site and it''s been an excellent resource for me. I have a question regarding a stone I''m looking at purchasing as a center stone.

How does the stone below rate in terms of quality? Looks like the crown angle barely prevents it from being an AGS0 as well as AGA 1A. HCA rates it as 1.1 which compares very well to a lot of the other GIA excellent stones I''ve looked at which generally seem to rate in the 1.6-2.6 range. Also, how would you rate this stone compared to some of the other definitions I''ve seen out there including super ideal, signature ideal, etc.

GIA (report #17416158)
Carat: 1.08
Color: H
Clarity: VS2
cut: ex
Polish: ex
Symmetry: ex

HCA: 1.1

Depth: 61.9%
Table: 56%
Crown: 33.5
Pavilion: 41
Girdle: medium to slightly thick

Cost: $6,541

Thanks for your help!

Hi AJ,

Do you have an Idealscope image for this diamond please? It could be a very nice diamond, but an IS would be useful if available. Is it with an online vendor?

The position of the X on the HCA plot will tell you how it compares to other 'ideal' standards. The dotted box contains parameters meeting GIA excellent, the solid box contains the AGS Ideal parameters. If "falls within TIC" appears on the HCA report, then the stone falls within the Tolkowsky standards for ideal. I believe that super-ideal is not a qualified term, but rather an adjective bandied about. Signature Idea is used by BN and probably a few B&M retailers, and I don't believe we have access to those guidelines.

Does that help?

The stone is from Bluenile and unfortunately I don''t have a idealscope image..

It appears to fall within theTolkowsky standards for ideal. I''m going to email BN to see if they can provide an IS image. I''ll post when I get a response.

Is there no way to tell how good a stone is based on the numbers? I''m sure it can''t be 100% accurate, maybe 80% accurate? :)

Here''s BN''s response to my query regarding an Idealscope image:

"Thank you for contacting Blue Nile.

I''m sorry to say that we are not able to provide IdealScope reports for our diamonds. This is primarily because the majority of the vault locations that we store our diamonds at do not have these machines on site, but also because we do not believe that these reports offer a good value to our customers. A cut appraisal machine is only as good as its calibration, and unless these machines are meticulously calibrated, they will not produce accurate results. Even when perfectly calibrated, the same diamond run through the same machine three times will produce three different results. (This is an experiment I would recommend trying if you ever happen to be at a jewelry store with one of these machines.)

Another reason we stay away from these kinds of reports is that the new AGS and GIA reports have largely superseded the need for additional cut grade assessment. The GIA and AGS are the undisputed leaders and gold standard for diamond grading in America, and their new cut grade assessments are the result of many years of research. Other assessments are neither as widely recognized nor as highly valued as GIA reports, so we have decided that the price increases that would result from providing these reports would not be acceptable to the majority of our customers.

I apologize that I can''t be of more assistance. Please let me know if you have further questions or if there is anything else I can do to assist you.

Best Regards,"

Is is true that Idealscope images are not accurate??

No. Idealscopes also don't need calibrating, they are reflector devices not reports, it sounds to me as if the writer of the email isn't familiar with Idealscope.

Idealscope is incredibly useful for round diamonds.
