How fast do you type?

For kicks I just took an online typing test (www.typingtest.com) and I got 77 wpm with 1 error over a 3 minute test. I thought it would be faster than that, but I make a lot of mistakes when I''m transcribing and I tend to hit backspace quite a bit lol I only missed one mistake - I made many more than that but since I already took the wpm hit hitting backspace, we won''t talk about those lol

I did the one minute test and did 82 with 1 error so adjusted 81. I think I would be much slower at the 3 minute test just because I would drive myself nuts trying to finish lol

I came in at 67 wpm with three errors. I know for a fact I can go faster than that when I''m typing something that''s coming out of my own brain, LOL!

I totally think I type faster when I''m typing original thought - plus I read as I type so I edit more effectively as well. Typing from a script is much tougher and it makes me nervous!!!

And firey - you''d be surprised. I think the 3 min one is easier because you settle into a rhythm and you know you have some time so you aren''t counting the clock...

86 wpm adjusted. 87 wpm with three errors before adjusted.

I took the three minute test.

I type MUCH faster when I''m typing out my own thoughts. I also didn''t like how the text bumped up as I went along, that slowed me down.

I just got 97 wpm with 0 errors on the one minute test. Interesting.

ETA: This is interesting, and something I never thought about: The website says I save "6.5 hours per week" if typing two hours a day.

Of course, I'd never admit to any of this in person. Never tell anyone you can type.

Agreed. I liken it to sight-reading piano music for the first time. Obviously if it is something I have not played before, or a different arrangement, I''m not going to be perfect at it the first time. If I''m playing a piece I have memorized, though, I''ve already got it down pat and can play to tempo consistently.

I remember taking typing class on a typewriter! We took keyboarding the following year, but I learned to type on an old school (but electric!) typewriter. The girl who sat next to me was also a pianist and we were in hot competition all semester to see who could type the fastest. I think we both tied at 68 WPM/no errors in the end.

I type ~80 wpm now. I always get different results on these online tests, and the couple of times I''ve tested for temp agencies they let you practice as long as you want and then begin so really it just gives a vague idea of how fast you can actually type.

An aside: I haven''t played piano for a couple years again now...I highly doubt I could play the Minute Waltz or Flight of the Bumblebee up to speed anymore!!!

I typed 96wpm with 2 errors, so adjusted to 94wpm on the one minute test. Generally I don't type that fast, and I type with more errors when I'm typing out of my head, but I'm pretty quick at transcribing. I think I missed my calling as a stenographer or something!

eta: I guess I'm the only one who types slower when thoughts are coming out of my head. Maybe I have a hard time thinking about what to say and typing it at the same time! I probably type in the 80s out of my own brain.

eta2: On the 3 min test I got 93wpm, but I made enough errors that I was adjusted to 89wpm.

I got 83 WPM. It is much easier to type out my own thoughts!

My adjusted wpm was 69. When I was working I typed over 100 wpm. Interesting how much you lose it if you don''t use it.

Wow, I actually did better than I thought (I thought I''d come in at around 60 wpm). It was 81, then adjusted for 5 errors which made it 76. I do tend to make a lot of mistakes while typing...I never learned how to type formally, so my typing methods are not textbook correct. I didn''t actually know how to type until after college and I learned how to type along the way at work. God, I only went to college 20 years ago...doesn''t seem that long, but in the 90''s we were allowed to turn in handwritten papers for some classes!!

88 w/o mistakes... 79 adjusted for mistakes. I blame it on my long fingernails.

I wish I hadn''t taken the test. I''m competitive, so I have a feeling I will continue to take it to improve upon my personal best. I might even have to trim my fingernails!!!

Like everyone else, my typing is faster when it''s coming from my own thoughts.

I took the same test twice - the Tiger one. First time, my speed was 58 and the second time it was 65.

Slower than everyone else.

Fun!

109 with four oopses.

I got 44 wpm (adjusted) in one minute, and I made 2 errors.

I always end up pressing the backspace key so often while typing because I make a lot of mistakes. Sometimes I can type without looking and other times I have to check the keys. I don't follow the "rule" of putting your fingers on the home keys; I do my own thing. I have noticed that when my nails are cut shorter, I type faster.

ETA: Okay, now I'm embarassed. I'm REALLY slow compared to the rest of you! I do agree that I can type my own thoughts much faster than someone else's. I didn't like how the text changed colors as I typed. It threw me off.

80 lpm!!

I did 82 wpm with 0 errors. I type faster at work. I have a Macbook at home and a big ergonomic keyboard at work so I''d like to retake the test tomorrow at work to see how fast I can go!

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed I was one of the slower ones here! I took it a couple of times and averaged around low 70s with a couple of errors. I am very fast with the 10 key pad tho since I use it allll day long. Got some fast typists here on PS I guess

I'm a bit faster when my nails are shorter I think... right now they're kinda long. Nobody I know besides me can touch type- DH types with four fingers, staring at the keyboard, and so does my sister- they're surprisingly quick with that method, actually. My FIL is painful to watch with a keyboard. Two-finger hunt and peck with lengthy pauses between each letter. And he types a lot! It's totally silly, he should know where the keys are by now!

lol! I''m sorry! :) I do keep my nails a ''working length''... I was talking to dh last night - I have a friend who can do 120 and I told him I couldn''t even imagine going that fast... I think to improve my typing I would have to improve my reading ability and spelling ability. I say each word out loud in my head as I type, so I''m limited in that way - if I could just train myself to type what I see instead of what my brain hears, I''d be better off. My friend is an ubergenious (literally) and only slows to 90wpm when she''s on the phone - still transcribing or doing a test like this. She''s compartmentalized lol

bahahaha :)

DH works for a huge microelectronics company and the main mode of communication is through an instant messaging device. Some people type fast, but DH is always blown away by how slow the majority of people type. It''s very hard to have an online communication with someone when it takes minutes between responses. It drives him batty that hardly anyone can type at a reasonable speed (I consider reasonable about 40 or 50 - so not that fast!)

When my mom got her computer (she''s been dead over 10 years so we''re going back a ways) I told her she really needed to learn how to type and she just wouldn''t do it - I kept telling her that her computer experience would be so much better.... she would IM me on aol (back in the day) and it would take FOR-EVER for her to type out some short sentence with numerous typos... like hii SAra ,, this is yore MOM. Always cracked me up - I would intentionally start IMs with several other people just to fill the time lol

DH does that too. Haha. He''ll be IMing several co-workers at once and still responding faster than they are. It would be one thing if they worked for any other company, but it''s a major computer company! You''d think a bunch of computer and engineering nerds would know how to type

my aunt (her sister) is just as bad but with her I avoid any instant messaging (I have it all turned off for everyone right now, just not in the mindset for it) so I get emails from her instead which is fine... I really don''t care HOW long it takes for her to type me a note, but I''m going to exercise my *extra* 5.5 hours per week not waiting haha
