How durable is hand engraving on ring shank?

I've been looking at pictures of e-rings and wedding bands with hand engraved scrollwork or wheat patterns. I presently have a plain plat band and have seen how it patinas over time. How do hand engraved bands wear? Does the engraving disappear over time? How do you maintain the engraving over time? Would 18k gold or plat. hold the engraving better?
