Hi Mac

Well cut diamonds do not have excessive depth ( 62.6%) as a rough guide, too much depth can make a diamond look small for the weight which is undesirable. In the case of fiery ideal cuts ( FIC) which is a type of diamond which can show extra fire, some extra depth is acceptable however.

However the main components which are responsible for beauty are the crown and pavilion angles, these are the main engines which drive light return. But you want all the proportions including the depth to be within good range to produce a beautiful diamond.

This page explains how depth relates to face up size in the round diamond.

Thanks Lorelie.

The happiest range of depth varies with the shape, outline, of the diamond. The depth range provided above is important for round diamonds, but most fancy shapes require greater depths. Some of this greater depth is to compensate for the longer length of some fancy shapes while the depth % is only a measure pertaining to total depth to "width". Since "width" does not tell the whole story, extra depth may compensate to an extent.

On the other hand, very deep measures on fancy shapes rarely lead to "better" looking diamonds, but they do lead to smaller looking ones. Getting a good relationship of visual size to weight is a smart move.
