How do you spend your free time at work?

Besides being on Pricescope of course!

I find myself with a TON of free time at work. Quite possibly, I spend more time NOT working than working. It''s not because I''m ignoring my work though, it''s because I have nothing to do.

I have books, magazines, my phone and the computer. I feel guilty having so much free time though. I guess I''m just super efficient.

What do you guys do to pass the time? Interesting sites to share? Books? Magazines?

For what it''s worth...Hyperbole and a Half is pretty funny!
Dooce.com, tastespotting.com, cnn.com....

Read a book, surf PS, email other bored coworkers.

Technically it''s not work if you have free time

Sorry I had to say it.

I PS, FB, talk with friends over gchat and gmail, etc.

True. For me though, waking up and driving here is work! LOL. Sitting here waiting to go home is work.

I wish I had more time to breathe at work. I force myself to take 5 min breaks every 3-4 hours to clear my head. Most of the time that goes in a pee/tea break and a few min on PS/check hotmail. That said, if I did have more free time, I''d drive myself crazy. I remember a week into my new job I had a spare hour one day and honestly, I was going insane.

I prefer being busy, but when I''m not, I check PS, email, and smitten kitchen:-)

Mainly Pricescope, and Facebook.

I''m curious how the supervisors here reacted to this thread.

I''m not working at the moment, but when I was, as a supervisor, I understood that sometimes the work came in peaks and troughs. Part of the role was being on-site to respond to things when they came in, which almost inevitably meant some down-time for some people throughout the week. Our workplace did not allow FB or other social networking sites, they were blocked. While I would prefer people to be doing something work related with any down time, it was a stressful, emotionally difficult job and I totally understood that sometimes they needed to look at something else from time to time.

We did have a policy of supporting people to gain qualifications, so if someone had downtime and they were in the study programme, they were encouraged to use that time to work on assignments, revision etc.

With that said, I would expect deadlines and targets to be met first and foremost. It would only have been a problem if other things took precedence over the work (although I never saw that happen).

I don''t remember exactly what I did when I was working, I know I read the news a lot more than I do now and I surfed the net for random stuff. I never used IM or gchat, though, for some reason they just felt off-limits even other people used them and my supervisor didn''t really care. For my job, I was required to be there but there wasn''t always a lot to do -- much of the time, it was "hurry up and wait" because especially toward the end, I would develop ideas for the database we were building, send it to IT, they''d take forever to send it back, I''d test what they did, note glitches and changes that needed to be made, send it back to them, wait...and on and on ad nauseam. There were other things to do, but they didn''t take up a lot of my day, and even though I was constantly asking for new projects, there just weren''t any. It nearly drove me crazy. I really hope the job I''m starting in the fall will keep me busy...

I tend to buy things off the internet...

This week I have ordered:

A kindle

Picture frames

Duvet and pillow shams

Cryo cuff (ice compression thing for my knee)

And something else I can''t think of right now...

I read about diamonds.

What the heck is free time at work???

Sure I'm on PS during work hours, but that's because I'm procrastinating.

ETA: Okay, I admit it. I've had jobs in the past that were a snore. I like zug.com for humor and you can always go Sporcle.

Hahaha! I teach at a special needs high school, so the concept of 'free time' is but a dream.

At lunch, I chat with my friends at work and check Facebook and email on my phone. But most of the time, I'm juggling a dozen different things and running around like a headless chicken. But I love my job, truly!

I don''t have much free time but when I do, I chat with co-workers and check my e-mail. PS, FB, and other surfing has to wait til I get home.

Threadjack, but Octavia - have you got yourself a law job? If so, huge congratulations!

Jen

We''re not "allowed" to have free time at work, so I''m told, and if we''re caught on the internet, except at lunch, we could be fired-I didn''t get that email so whatever. We don''t get scheduled breaks so if I want to check my email in between patients, yep, I''m gonna.

One job I had, I spent a lot of time cleaning and organizing.

My first ever "real" job, we had a tv and radio, and I always had a book or worked on homework. Wrote letters to my gramma. Jeez that job was easy!

, sort of a clerkship but for an agency judge rather than a trial/appellate court judge. They promised I''d be busy, I really hope it''s true!

email, PS... our projects have huge highs and huge lows, so I'm either finding ways to entertain myself for twelve hours straight or I'm running 'round with fifty things to do and another fifty due in an hour.

I get on PS
FB
StumbleUpon
text friends
chat with coworkers

I have a lot of down time at work, my boss doesnt really care because when there is work to be done we do it and we do it well.

Good for you! I hope you enjoy it, that''s fantastic news.

Before I retired from teaching, my free time consisted of a 10 minute break at 10 am (yep, pee and tea) and a lunch break of 30 minutes during which students could ask for help or the principal would want to ''discuss'' something with you (mainly how he could expand my experience with a ''project''!!!!).

We very rarely get free time (we hardly ever even have a lunch break-just have to eat on the go). We don''t have internet access in work so if we do get a free minute we spend it gossiping or hugging a cute kitty/puppy if there''s one in.

Pee and tea...HA! Isn''t it funny how you have to plan when you''re going to use the rest room? I do that now and my husband thinks it''s funny that my bladder seems to KNOW when I have a minute to spare.

Pricescope. Of course! :P

I wish I had downtime at work! My job is incredibly crazy right now. I have 850 employees, 60 locations to file business taxes/licenses, 16 states to file sales taxes, and accounting functions at month end. I go from so busy I don''t see the top of my desk through my stack of "to-do"s for a week, to busy but I can still take lunch and I get most things done by Friday. After the wedding in a few weeks I plan on looking for another job.

Read a book. Play the game words for free on my iPhone. Surf PS. And daydream about the end of the work day.
