I'm cross-posting from RT. I hope that's ok!

How do you set up an installment plan on PayPal when selling jewelry privately?

I just looked up PayPal's terms, and there is a way to set up installment programs (for a $20 fee?), but the seller has to ship the item BEFORE THE FIRST PAYMENT. :o Or, at least, that's my understanding.

I have done informal installment arrangements, once as a seller and one as a purchaser, both times with PSers I "knew" ... and both times the item did not ship until paid in full.

I don't think I'd do it if it wasn't with a PSer... just my 2 cents.

Thank you. I don't think this is a PSer. If I set up an informal installment plan, it would leave the buyer more vulnerable, from what I understand. I wish there was a way to arrange it in order for both parties to be secure. Instead of doing a payment plan, perhaps I can agree to hold the item until the buyer can pay in full.

I'm just wondering what others have done in this situation.

Have the buyer apply for "paypal credit" where they can make payments and pay within 6 months. This way it's between them and Paypal - you're out of the installment equation.

You could sell it on Etsy and the person could pay their installments via PayPal :eh:
I've seen lots of jewelry items on "layaway" on Etsy. It seems to protect both parties and secure the transaction.

I've seen that on Etsy, too. However, I took a look at the conditions for Seller Protection and Buyer Protection on PP, and it says you lose PP Protection if you make multiple payments for one item. Surely these Etsy vendors know something I don't. Anyway, I have had success since my buyer decided to go with PP Credit. He can make his payments to PP while I get all the money up front. His payment already cleared, so now he'll be getting the ring next week instead of in a few months!
