How do you know when the diamonds listed in the PS search are new?

Wouldn''t all of the best diamonds be bought right away? and the stuff that''s available be stuff that might be considered 2nd rate?

I don''t know about that. After all, many people have different opinions about what are the best diamonds. Take color, some people would never buy a I or J stone, no matter how great the cut or how few the inclusions. Some would never "waste" the money on a colorless. There are lots of different budgets and lots of different priorities. And I do not think there is a way to tell which are new.

my best and your best might be two totally different things.

fortunately, there is something for everbody and eventually the right diamond gets matched with the right person.

There are thousands of diamonds all the time... I don't thing they 'go' at such a rate that this might be a problem. They'd wish!

Anyway, I feel a bit cynic today: even if there wouldn't be enough goods to go around and there would be a queue of angry shoppers waiting for the next cherry... The data on those lists is not enough to decide which the best ones are and I don't think all the buyers that get access to this stock online or off know what to look for or would even choose the same if they would spend the time to get informed (like Belle says diplomatically).

Besides, there is a price for quality too - also rather hard to tell from random markup without more information than the list provides. That ought to slow down the preference for the top pickings any day.

Listings are updated every week.

hmmm. Valeria101 do you mean 'quality' as in high priced stores such as Harry Winston, Tiffany, Cartier or who sells these stones which have a premium price above the random markup, do we know?

I''ll actually try to answer the question asked in the title:

Most diamonds are a couple of billion years old if you believe in scientific type dating, and only 4-5000 years old if you believe in some forms of biblical dating (where the english word "day" is interpreted as 24 hours, etc regardless of the intent of the orignal language and meaning).

Either way, no diamonds are new.

In fact, some might even have been in circulation for a hundred or more years and had previous "owners." Now reground and repolished. In a few cases, you get the cut and polish of years ago. Guess what. There is no way to tell....

Have fun with whatever diamond you eventually get. At least for a while - it will be yours. Unless it gets destroyed - it will be arround for thousands of years. What are our future generations going to do with all of them?

a premium price about the random markup, do we know?
I don''t feel that good saying that respectable jewelry brands sell widgets - I don''t think so.

That post was trying to say that quality and markup may go together or not - so price alone is not a reliable signal for quality, due to imperfect information about goods and who-knows what other factors. For example, I have no idea where those diamonds come from, how on earth prices were adjusted due only to seller''s position rather than the thing itself, etc.

Honestly, I think that better cuts came at a premium anyway, even if details are not shown as such for the benefit of the tiny fraction of internet buyers, because at least part of the transactions over these stones before they reach the final user are done between informed expert dealers. In theory... And it surely happens in practice too, as soon as one gets to choose, that is. Perhaps the final quote we see doesn''t quite show it because of conflicting factors... etc.

As a rule of thumb, I am always leery of taking prices as a quality mark. At extremes it works, but I am neither that rich or that poor.

This is about it... Hope some of the stuff makes better sense

Thanks Valeria101. I did mean that question to be a bit tongue in cheek.

I think the same as you that the top quality cuts will be at a premium.

Argh.... Yeah! My sense of humor needs a vacation! Yiks

No......for a myriad of reasons.

1) Some people don''t know enough when purchasing to be looking for the "best" diamonds. They choose among what''s available at their local B&M store.

2) Everyone''s budget is different, and everyone''s tolerances are different. If price were no object, we''d likely all drive outrageously fancy, expensive cars, right? But not everyone can afford one, and some wouldn''t appreciate the "finer" distinctions of real performance cars. For some, cars are just transportation to tote them around, and bells/whistles would be lost on them, right?

3) What''s available can also be affected by diamonds that are owned and then traded up for a better stone. Hence, a stone an an older grading report may have been previously owned or not. Doesn''t make it any less beautiful than it was at time of grading.
