I am thinking of getting an upgrade of my current diamond solitaire. I want to get a bigger stone . I love the color of my current (F). I believe it is an SI1 but it looks beautiful to me. anyway, how do I go about doing an upgrade? Do they use the price it is appraised for to put towards the other diamond I want to purchase? Sorry, dumb questions.

does your original jeweler have an upgrade program or trade-in? if not, then you will have to either sell it outright and take the cash to get a new stone (you will probably take a fairly large loss on an outright sale), or find a jeweler who will sell it for you on consignment (where you could maybe get 80% of what you paid back), or find a jeweler who is willing to take your stone on trade-in for a certain value (probably wholesale, not what you paid and not what it was appraised for) and give you credit or something in their store for a purchase.

without the original upgrade/trade-in program which is usually dollar for dollar on your original purchase price, it''s hard to just do an upgrade because you have to find someone willing to sell or buy your stone first. good luck!

Some people also like to keep the old stone for sentimental reasons and put it in a pendant or RHR, but this is definitely more expensive of course than trading in the old diamond.

Mara is right upgrading a diamond really only works if you bought it from a jeweler who is willing to take it back in trade for a more expensive stone. I have traded up with my local jeweler a couple of times and he gave the amount that I paid him for the original diamond (or in the case of earrings, diamonds).

James Allen www.jamesallen.com offers a program where they will buy your stone if you purchase another diamond from them.
