I have thick curly (although easily straightened) hair that falls to about 2 inches above my bra strap. I''ve been trying to figure out some sort of an updo for a wedding but I honestly can''t even seem to work a bobby pin! Any advice or tips on how to do an updo??

TIA!!

I don''t know the "real" answer, but I''d suggest youtube. There are tons of step by step hair and make up tutorials.

I''m so lazy these days that I simply put mine into a ponytail holder and pull "almost" all the hair through and it remembles the Palin updo, but the modified sane version.

Haha, best updo ever! I do that all the time in the summer. My hair is similar to yours, somethingshiny. I usually pull curls out around my face, and out of the ponytail loop thing. It always entertains me because I often have people ask me how I do that hairstyle, like I must have labored intensively over it. No, try spent 30 seconds, often without a mirror!

Perhaps not classy enough for a wedding, but I''d probably do it anyway, lol. I often wrap vintage rhinestone bracelets or necklaces into my hair when I wear it like that, too. With bracelets you don''t even need bobby pins to anchor them, and the ponytail elastic is totally hidden.

Thanks for the youtube suggestion. The Palin do sounds doable (pun intended!) I''ll play with that and see what happens. Thanks!!

I once did an updo that I got many compliments on so you could give it a try...

Leave your hair curly
Make like you are going to do a half up ponytial. When you are done with the elastic pull about half the hair through and instead of leaving the rest in the back of your head move it around to the front. You will have a little bit of curl right there and it keeps the ponytial from looking as severe.
Then pull a few clumps of hair from the bun thing so that you have a few curly tendrils(sp) hanging down the back.

It creates a lot of dimension and is so easy, yet people seem to think that it looks nice.

I can''t picture any of these! What do you mean "through". After the elastic is secured? Gah! I''m confuzzled. Maybe You Tube is the way for me ... need video. LOL!

Easiest updo ever:

1) Put hair in ponytail at the level you want the updo, leving some tendrils out if you''d like.
2) Take a smallish section of the ponytail, twist it, making a loop, and pin it to your head near the ponytail holder. Cross pin each piece for extra staying power.
3) Repeat until you have the whole ponytail pinned around the ponytail holder. I find that six or seven pinned pieces look about right. You might need more if your hair is thicker.
4) Spray!

It''s supposed to look a little messy, so don''t make the twists or loops too perfect. This style takes about 5 minutes for me.

Ok here''s my opinion of worlds EASIEST updo that gets soooo many compliments its really ridiculous considering how much time it takes to do.

Ok step one- definitely leave your hair curly for the updo, it hides so many flaws of the updo IMO if you''re like me and just winging it.

Step two- get yourself some big a$$ bobby pins. I like these A LOT. My hair isn''t even that thick and regular bobby pins fall out in a heart beat. These work much better.

No-Slip Hair Pins

Big ones like this are ok too but I think the ones above have a little more hold.
large bobby pins

Ok I usually then part my hair slightly off center cause it tends to look a little classier on me. Then take pieces from around your face (usually pretty sizeable pieces - as much as you think the bobby pins will hold) and just twist it and bring it to the back of your head (I usually twist towards my part but thats my preference) and pin it with the big bobby pins. (if its not 100% secure thats ok as you will be putting a lot more bobby pins in, but do make sure it is fairly secure or the whole updo will just start to sag throughout the day, which doesn''t always look bad, just starts to feel loose)

Then just continue to do that will pieces near your face and do a similar thing to the hair by your neck twisting it and bringing it across the back of your head (if the hair is from the bottom left of my head I tend to pin it towards the top right since my hair is long and it helps me keep the updo not looking sloppy with long hair). Since my hair is long like yours when you finish the first this first set of pinnings your hair will look ridiculous, thats ok. Just keep sticking bobby pins in to pin up loose pieces (and those long ends, you can twist them back towards the center of the updo until there are just little ends sticking out) and make everything feel secure.

I know this sounds complicated but its really not. Its just pinning pieces up until its all secure. If you have naturally curly hair it will look pretty fancy no matter how you do it. I literally do this to my hair in about 8 minutes without a mirror and still manage to get compliments... and i''m no hair updo genius by any means.

And my biggest piece of advice no matter what updo style you choose to do. TRY IT BEFORE THE DAY OF THE WEDDING! Cause I bet there will be a huge improvement between the first second time you try it.

The way I do my quick & dirty updo, is I go to make a rather high ponytail- pull the elastic around it once like you normally do. Then when you double the elastic and would normally pull the hair all the way through to make the ponytail, don't pull the hair through. Leave it in a big loop instead. And pull a few strands all the way through, and some loose around my face usually. With my texture of big floppy curls, it makes a big fluffy sort of victorian looking poof piled up at the back of my head. Then I usually clasp a rhinestone bracelet around the elastic to hide it.

ETA: I doubt it would look particularly good with straight hair, and your hair has to be rather long to do it too. The curly puffiness of my hair is what makes it look like an updo.

I call the top of head, twisting into a bun, pulling most of the way through the elastic a "messy bun."

And SS, for an updo adaptation, you can pull out several symmetrical pieces from the bun, use a curling iron and roll them under and then bobby pin them against the bun underneath. I have a hard time articulating hairstyles since I never went to "beauty school..." but I''ll try to find a pic of the style I''m thinking of, which you could probably pretty easily adapt to your hair using a flat iron and bobby pins (or curling iron which you prob don''t posses!) I''m thinking of a Jennifer Lopez style she wore for some event back in 2003 or so.

Here''s one...I had my hair done once like this for a wedding I attended. The hotel salon stylist did her own adaptation so it didn''t look precisely like it, but it worked.

For me it generally involves calling a hairstylist.

Easy do-it-yourself updo...

Straighten your hair.

Divide the hair into two sections, across the horizontal middle of your head.

Smooth sectioned hair into two pony tails right "on top" on each other horizontally.

Take small sections of the hair pulling them straight out. Using a curly iron loosely curl each section to get a nice bend.

Insert a bobby pin mid strand, twist the hair around the pin and insert the pin into the area around your pony tails.

Working around head, repeat the steps.

Italia, can you explain that bit further pretty please? I''m confused. TIA!

The first look in this youtube clip is one I''ve used for a wedding. It looks like Michelle Williams'' hair in the photo. I didn''t blow out my hair but left it wavy/curly and it turned out pretty good and was super easy to do.

Thanks for all the advice!! I will grab some pins, the no-slip ones look the way to go!, and start trying these styles today.

Italia~ I''m lost on the "mid-strand" clipping, can you elaborate please?

And thanks to everyone who posted pics, it helps to see these styles before attempting!

Wish me luck! I''m picturing rabid poodle if I can''t get this right!!

Sorry...

Once the hair is curled, pull a section straight out. In the middle of the section, slide the bobby pin in...so, if you''re holding the hair horizontal the slide the pin on vertically.

And then wrap the loose end around before placing the pin in the rest of the hair, right??

Side ponytail turned into a bun with a big flower or feather piece. I ALWAYS feel glamorous.

Starset~ Thanks for the tip, but these ears can''t pull that off!

Okay, I''ve been playing with pins and watching Youtube for a couple hours but I''m having the same problem no matter what style I''m attempting. The pins keep popping back out. I have been sliding and then pivoting the pin under the hair like the videos show, but by the time I get 2-3 more pins in, the first is popping out a bit. I thought maybe it had too much hair in it, but as I was playing with less hair, it was still popping. It doesn''t matter if I''m doing a twist or if I''m just pinning small sections randomly. Any ideas??
