....so that it doesn't fall straight off the mantelpiece??

My stockings are full and pretty heavy and I recently bought 2 holders. But now that I have them - what stops them falling straight off when I hook the stockings onto them? The lid comes off these, and they can be filled with sand, or something similar, but even so....

They're from Ballard Designs, and here is the link:

I'm guessing there is a law of....physics(?) that can explain how stocking holders work. :D

I would be the wrong person to try to explain that, but I have very simple holders and they have never fallen from our mantel, whether the stockings were empty or full.

I love the ones in that link, but I'm pretty sure those boxes should be filled with sparklies, not sand!!!!

Those are pretty! I use the command strips for anything I want stuck down. They can be removed when you are done and don't have to be used for just the hooks. You can buy just the strips at any store like Walmart, Home Depot, etc.

Thank you so much! Just bought some through Amazon Prime. :)

I think they will work fine. When you attach them make sure to put the side that would be on the hook on your boxes so they work the same way. Also you will need to have the little flap you grab to remove them sticking out to one of the sides - I would do it in the back so it hides it a bit.

As an aside, I had a work trip to the 3M HQ plant and their Discovery/Invention Center in Minnesota. It was wild to see all the things their engineers have invented over the decades. The bowels of the testing centers were very interesting.

Those are cute! Wish I had a mantel.

Anyway, as long as the structure is stiff (it may need a little counterweight), and the stockings don’t swing, the weight should be distributed straight down and the holders should support your stockings.

Thank you, ladies! I tried them and - lo and behold! - physics won!
:D

I'd fill the boxes with adequate weight.

Nope - all is well and it worked just fine. No nails, sticky stuff, or weighted fillers needed. The hook on which you place the stocking presses against the mantelpiece when weighted, which stops it from falling off.

We don't hang them once they are filled. We just set them on the fire place. The stockings are only hung when they are empty.
