How do I find out the cut grade for my princess cut?

Hi there,

I am trying to find out the cut grade for my princess cut diamond. I was given my engagement ring in February, but the GIA report is from January 2005 and doesn't mention the cut grade. I'm not sure why the report is so old, but I'm fairly certain it's not a used diamond since it was from Cartier. At any rate, I know that everyone on PriceScope recommends Ideal or Excellent cut stones. So I'm hoping it's very good or better. Based on the thread below it looks like it's between a class 1B and 2A -- whatever that means.

On the GIA site it mentions that most stones it has graded from January 1, 2005 they will be able to give a cut grade for, but they only mention round brilliant diamonds. So does this mean that fancy cuts don't get a grade report?

It also says this:
If your report is dated between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2005: simply return your original report to the Laboratory, and a new report containing a cut grade will be issued to you. In a small number of cases, you also may need to submit your diamond to the Laboratory. To find out whether your diamond must be returned, please go to GIA Report Check and enter your diamond’s report number and carat weight. If Report Check returns a cut grade for your diamond, the diamond does not need to be submitted and a new report will be reissued to you upon request for a nominal fee.

So I checked my stone, but there is still no cut grade. However, sending my ring to GIA isn't really an option right now. So I just need to know if there is some way for me to ascertain how good the cut is without shipping it off to GIA.

Here are the stats:

Square Modified Brilliant
Measurements: 5.72 x 5.71 x 4.42 mm
Carat Weight: 1.18 carat
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: VVS1
Proportions
Depth: 77.4%
Table: 74%
Girdle: Slightly Thick
Culet: None
Finish
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None

I also tried to use the AGA/NAJA Cut Class Diamond Grading Screening Tool but I have no idea what the Crown Height % is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! But if the cut is terrible, maybe I don't want to know. lol.
Thank you.

GIA does not issue cut grades for non-round stones. Only AGS issues a cut grade for princess cuts.

Short of sending it to AGS...if you'd like to assess the cut for yourself, you can buy an ASET scope and take a look yourself:

Thanks for the information! That makes sense. I don't think my FI would like me shipping my diamond to Las Vegas for an evaluation. But an ASET scope looks like fun. I will definitely look into it.

Cheers!

Thanks, Christina. It looks like it's between a 2A - 2B, but I'm not sure what that means.

I'm sorry I missed that you didn't have the crown angle. Fancy shapes are difficult, and IMO can't be judged by the numbers alone, you really need to assess them yourself, and ASETs are extremely handy. I don't own one, but I've thought about ordering it and the IS several times. I may just go and do that right now! ;))
