My fiancee just gave me this gorgeous ring that he bought offline... it was decribed as a 1ct diamond but when I got it it measured at a little over 8 mm... its set in 10kt white gold and I''ve tried the scratch, bluelight, and tried reading through it and it passed all tests.... but he got it for under a hundred dollars... is it possible that its real and he just got lucky?

what bluelight test? go to a jeweler and ask.

Highly unlikely. Unless he bought it from a guy who picked it up when it fell off a truck, maybe. (By "offline," do you mean "online"?) Jewelers don''t set 8 mm diamonds--which would be in the 2 ct range--in 10K gold settings, and they don''t sell them for less than $100.

You might take it to a jeweler''s shop and ask them if they can test it with an electronic tester.

It's highly doubtful that it's real...a 1 carat diamond should measure about 6.5mm...but you never know. Is it crystal clear or does it have a lot of inclusions?

I would get it appraised or at the very minimum bring it to a jeweler to have them use a diamond tester on it. The home tests aren't very reliable.

listen to your gut instinct...most likely not a diamond...bring it to a jeweler for clening and ask to have it diamond tested with a diamond gun.

I can''t imagine any real diamond in the 1ct range for under $100. Just doesn''t seem possible. Take it to a jeweler and have it tested.

No, I don''t think he got lucky. Get it tested, before you address it with him.

If this was meant as an inexpensive gift, no harm done. If this was meant as an engagement ring, you might want to take this advice!!! He should have at least had it checked out before giving it to you at less than $100.

An 8mm stone that is real should cost 8-30 thousand dollars, your stone is most likely a CZ. A one carat stone should be 6.5 mm and cost 4k and up.

I can''t imagine it is real but go to a jeweler and find out. They can do it for free. At least he''s only out $100.

If it really only weighs in the 1 carat range and passes most of the simple diamond tests, it might be synthetic moissanite which would require a secondary test or an expert to just examine the way the stone looks under a loupe. Moissanite often fools folks on the initial test for CZ. Don''t get your hopes up just yet.

If one takes a hammer to both, which one will fare better?

Breez,

To answer you question, I think your fiancee did get lucky. He has you. Unfortunately for him though, he is probably going to find out that you are smarter than he is in the diamond department.

Did he get it on bidz.com by chance? I know they claim to have a number of diamonds and they sell...or rather auction...them all at very low prices (doesn''t make them real though).

Don''t forget to let us know how it turns out!!!

Even so, a 1 ct moissanite can run $650-$800!....(that would be "new" of course...)

I think I'm voting for the hammer...

cheapest & most non-ethical way? put it up for sale & let someone else pay to have it appraised.

he has a better chance of hitting the lotto.

Just take it to your local jeweller - any sales person worth their salt should be able to tell you straight away.
But I''m afraid there is almost no chance it is real, sorry.
