I was totally outraged on your behalf until I got to the $50K. Now, I don't know what your lifestyle is, and I could be way off base (Maybe $50K is pocket change to you, IDK.), but my snap judgement is that if you and your DH could really afford to spend $50K on a ring, you would have had some kind of ER when you first got engaged.
Even if I had $50K sitting in the bank right now, I can think of a thousand other things to spend it on, things that would benefit BOTH my husband and I and our future (hopefully) children. THAT is probably where your husband is coming from. There's got to be a number somewhere between $0 and $50K that you'll BOTH be comfortable spending on an ER.
Plus, I'd be kind of scared to walk around with a ring that expensive. And the insurance costs...yikes
However, if you're independently wealthy or just won the lottery or something, just ignore my post
