My mother has a beautiful diamond stone that she wants to pass down. The current setting that the diamond is on isn't what I want. How difficult is it to find a setting that will match and fit this princess cut diamond (.5CT). I'm currently looking at this setting:

http://diamonds.ebay.com/ViewItem?sid=140372017126&fid=9610&src=share

- How will I know if it will work with what I have?
- How much does it usually cost to set a diamond?

Thanks Everyone!

Check the length and width of the stone size the setting will take.

From the page it says:

Wide Top: 2.70 mm
Wide Bottom: 2.50 mm
Height Top: 2.50 mm
Height Bottom: 1.50 mm

Are those it? Should I be able to match it up with the specs on the stone?
Thanks!

No, those are the ring shank's width and thickness.

It says on the page that it can fit princess stones from 0.25c to 3.50c.

Price depends on jeweler, so ask around and ask to look at their finish product to check their work, best price is usually not the best workmanship.

I see what you mean. I just thought the .25 to 3.5 CT was really general. Or do they make these settings general so that they fit most of all diamonds with that cut within those size ranges?

The prongs are quite high and tapered down, so the jeweler will measure your stone, then notched the prongs, depending on how high you want to set the stone and how well it fits, cut off the extra prong tip off, set the stone and then polish/round off the tip of the prongs.

So there shouldn''t be too much of a problem going with this route? It will fit snugly, of course this will depend on the craftsman but generally speaking. This is "do-able" and I shouldn''t be worried that they won''t match up? Am I correct to assume so? Thanks for the advice!

yap, should be doable, now is to find a jeweler who will do it for you.

Thanks again for the help. So do you think that setting is a good value for the price? So as I look for someone to set this for me. What is a general range of what is reasonable to pay. I know you said, cheapest isn''t the best of course, so what is idea?

Should I check the major jewelry vendors in the mall? Where else should I go to find someone to do it?
