How did you ultimately choose the ring for your girl?

Hey Guys!
It's been a long time since posting... I've been busy with all the engagement/wedding craziness (she obviously said yes haha).

Im curious how you all ultimately chose on the stone/setting. It was such a crazy ride for me as my fiance "knew" she wanted a radiant stone, but then ended up choosing a cushion brilliant that we found.

Did you guys somehow know which stone/setting she would like or did you just choose it for her. I designed the entire ring with my fiance, knowing that the suprise was likely going to be ruined. Luckily, I got the jeweler to lie about when it would be done so she was shocked on engagement day.

Curious to hear your thoughts :-)!

I am not a guy, but I will share what my hubby did. He started asking me to marry him after we had known each other for 6 months and I thought it was too soon- but he knew. In any case, I prepared a folder with three different engagement ring styles for him to choose from and the name of a friend of mine. (I wanted the best of both worlds- a surprise engagement but with a ring that I liked-LOL) I told him that if he was serious then he could go to the folder for ring ideas and I would never even have to know about it. The friend that I recommended he call to go through the process with was older, already married and had a daughter who was about to get married so she understood budget constraints and such. She also knew my personal sense of style.

My then boyfriend, also started asking me what type of diamond I liked. We were just getting established in our careers so I told him that I would be happy with any stone, diamond or sapphire that was at least .75 carats but great quality.

He ended up getting me a 1.25 stone with amazing fire and looks amazing to me even though it looks sucky if you go by HCA scores. He also gave me a beautiful setting similar to one of my inspiration pics in the folder. He went with a larger stone over quality (not what I asked- but I love my stone because he picked it) but we didn't know about PS or diamonds or anything like that and it is a great size for my finger.

I hope more PS'ers respond. I think this is a great topic :-)

I agree, great topic! I'm also not a guy, but the mr. and I talked about what shapes and styles we each liked and found some common ground. Then we discussed an agreed upon carat range, brand name vs. custom, etc. So we pretty much did everything together, but the proposal is up to him. It may not be a complete surprise this way, but rings are a big investment so I think it can be a good thing if this process isn't a complete surprise for her. Makes everyone less nervous hahaha.

Funny though, he introduced me to PS (only did some preliminary browsing) but once I started poking around the site to learn more, I became hooked. In terms of learning what a great stone actually is, he just kind of left that to me once I became slightly obsessed with the jewels/awesome PSers on this site haha. So I guess first it started out 50-50 him and me, then it became more of 20-80? Haha but that is how I preferred it, I guess!

My son just got engaged. He asked fiancée to go try rings to see what she liked. She thought she liked round but ended up loving emerald cut. She found the setting and he left the diamond shopping up to me. She was very surprised at her choice as she had never considered emerald cut, but it suits her personality! She is an accountant and it is very complex, organized and mathematical.
