How did you ship your items?

I was just trying to price out how much it would be to ship my item from my state to another state if I were to replace my setting and UPS is giving me a figure of $500...

That seems insane..

How did you ship your items?
If you want to share the cost.. how much was it?
Who did you go through?

Thanks!!!

Fed Ex offered me shipping from $413 for overnight to $359 ground... I am wondering though do I even need to insure it if I have it insured through my homeowners/ jewelry policy??

Advice please!

USPS using registered and insured mail.

Else check with JM if you are already insured under them if they cover personal shipping through FEDEX/UPS?

I have used registered, insured mail. I shipped a stone to an appraiser and it cost around $110.00 but it was an expensive stone. I just shipped something to JBEG for consignment and the registered, insured mail cost was $25.07. Registered mail is signed for by someone at every stop along the way. In addition, they stamp across every seam on the box so it is evident if someone tampers with it. You must use gummed paper tape to seal the box. Always request a return receipt, too (it's a green card that you fill out with your address and it comes back to you when the package has been delivered).

USPS insured registered priority mail. It was a small stone insured for $1k. Cost me aprox. $17.

USPS registered/insured mail, it takes about a week and should not be too expensive (I shipped something with $7500 declared value for $35)

I looked into registered mail and they only ship items up to $25k apparently, and UPS/FEDex only ship up to $50k

I have a call into an insurance agent to see what is covered if I ship it.. what a friggen nightmare

I really don't want to go local.

Oh and I am not under JM, I did look into it, but that fell through. I might need to do that again here as it sounds like a lot of people are happy with them.

haha maybe you can just fly it over :-D and make a trip out of it...but I would just call your insurance and check on it, or perhaps some other posters have experience shipping pricier items

You can buy additional insurance at the post office; I just did this when I sent a stone worth more than $25K to an appraiser. That's the package I sent that cost approximately $110.

YOU CANNOT insure jewelry with Fed-Ex even when the counter person says "no problem". They do NOT cover gems and jewelry.

UPS will not accept unset stones or stones set in temporary clamp holders EXCEPT from jewelers who are using special third party insurance coverage. Ship only permanently mounted stones and jewelry via UPS and you can insure up to 50K.

The Post Office insures Registered Mail up to $25K and you must declare the full value, usually the cost of a recent purchase, no matter how much more it might be insured for, and pay a surcharge for handling, BUT the postal service does NOT provide any further coverage than the first $25K of value. I sent a package yesterday registered mail for $31K and I have coverage above the $25K up to $75K potentially. This package came to $65 approximately, so it is a good, safe and relatively cheap way to ship.
The postal service will demand proof of cost and value if there is a loss. They will pay the lesser amount unless you have very strong evidence and a determination to wait for months and months. They will investigate all losses, so don't fool around with their inspectors.

When I do use Fed-Ex, I cover the package with third party insurance and it costs 2 to 3 times more than Registered Mail or overnight express mail with the Post Office. Consumers cannot use this service as they do not have coverage for shipping included in their policies.

When using UPS double box so that the contents are not readily accessible or removeable. Tampering happens and only ship Monday-Thursday to prevent a package from sitting in a facility waiting for someone to find the time to mess around with the contents.

Great tips!
I am wondering, what do you mean by being possibly covered for the value between $25k to the $31k?

I am guessing if I did mail an item.. nothing would happened to it, but I am SO paranoid (and unlucky) that I need to cover my butt here. :) I would not be able to replace this item if lost/ stolen/ misplaced. Not to mention the sentimental value...

I think I will speak with someone at USPS, but I have one more place I'm going to look locally too.

When I ship anything registered mail I carry a private policy coverage for amounts over $25K up to $75K. Individuals cannot buy that excess coverage and are limited to a maximum of $25K insurance with the Post Office. However, everyone MUST declare the full value and they surcharge you based on the total amount although no coverage over $25K is being given. Hope that clears up the situation.

OK just got off of the phone with someone at customer service at the post office.

I was told I COULD insure above $25k.. apparently up to $15M if I wanted to

It sounded like if I used a flat rate box (priority mail) it would be about $15 for that, and another $71ish for handling ($1.35 per $1000 value), plus extra $ for delivery confirmation, tracking, and then the amount for insurance... I think total was between $100-$200 I'm not sure as there were too many figures and numbers being thrown around.

:) Basically, it would be easier to go in and talk to someone.

I also JUST heard from my insurance company and I guess I WOULD be covered under "mysterious disappearance" if something did happen.

Does that mean I don't have to insure it for the full value? LOL

Yes.. thank you!

I wonder if she was looking under a business section for insuring over $25k for me then?

This mailing stuff is so confusing.

Maybe check with your local independent appraiser and see if he can ship it for you?

so when you ship FedEx, does your insurance policy cover that?

I just shipped my 2 ct RB in a plat solitaire setting to BGD via USPS registered insured mail, and it cost around $50 to insure up to $25K. It got there fine.

Mailed my wedding band back to BGD for less than $20, registered mail first class, with delivery signature confirmation. Sent it on a Thursday, and they rec'd it on Monday.

A dealer who has proper insurance on shipments can arrage to send you a label for you to ship items back to themselves with full coverage so long as you are doing business with that dealer.

You CANNOT buy more than $25K coverage with Registered Mail at the Post Office no matter what some postal clerk tells you. You are required to declare the full value, but you only can get $25K coverage. The full value dictates the risk and a handling charge pays for the security involved.

Someone who has dealer insurance can't send a shipment for you as a favor. They would end up having no coverage for such a shipment. Only if they are sending the shipment as part of their business, not as a favor or for only the postage, would they have active insurance. Insurance policies do not allow non-business related shipping insurance.

There are rules and no one wants to end up without their jewelry and without coverage in case of a loss. If you need to send an item over $25K to a dealer, ask them to supply a shipping label for insured transport and pay for this back to the dealer along with the fees for whatever else is being done for you. This would be the best way to handle a high value shipping event.
