I am new at this and have spent countless hours learning about diamonds. Even after all my research, I still know very little! I was curious to know how you think I made out. I just purchased a diamond and setting over the weekend. I am the kind of person that still does my homework after I have made a purchase, to see if I got a good deal or made the right decision.

Diamond details:
.91 carat; round
F color
VS1
Excellent Cut
Table: 59%
Depth: 62%
GIA cert
18K tapered cathederal solitare setting

I spent just over $5,200. I could have purchased the ring for about $200 less, if I had purchased it from another location. I felt it was important to purchase everything together, in case there are any issues in the future.

Thanks in advace!

Hi idolmind,
Could you please post the crown and the pavilion angles?

Crown: 33.5
pavilion: 41.4

Is the stone in question still within its return period?

yes...?

probably not that good, will probably have leakage, unless the lower half number is in the 80%. Idealscope image will be able to confirm if there is leakage.

The pavilion angle is quite steep and it is possible that it will show leakage in any case, it sounds like you have already purchased the stone, did it come from a jewellery store?

Do you have an aset image or an ideal scope image of the stone? If you do, please post them...

Here is what I can tell you. On the Holloway Cut Advisor we usually elimate stones that score over 2 and
concentrate on stones that score 0-2. Yours is scoring a 4.4. I'm afraid its loosing light because of the angles.

The HCA scores it like this:

Factor Grade

Light Return Good
Fire Good
Scintillation Good
Spread or diameter for weight Very Good

Total Visual Performance 4.4 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

Read info on the HCA here...

https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/holloway-cut-advisor/

Before you do anything...I'm sure some of our more experienced PSers will tell you why the angles are not working.
Please wait and get another opinion.

EDIT - See above...I knew they were around. Here is some info on angles. If the angles are NOT right the light will
shoot off through the bottom or the sides. Cut is everything with a diamond. Here is some info on angles.

I used the HCA, but instead of using angle degree, I used percentage and received a 2.6. thoughts?

I do not have an ideal scope image available.

HCA is more accurate with angles.

Yes, angles are better for the HCA, and 2.6 is no different than 4.4, both suggest that the stone is not the best angle combination.

But you have seen it, not us. In the end, the decision is yours, and we can only make best estimates of its cut performance using remote tools which are not 100% predictive of actual performance.

Ditto. I would look at some stones of known cut quality such as AGS0 Peerless brand if you have a Jareds closeby, that way you will have a base of comparison.

My thought is if you''re asking this question, the diamond may not be what you expected.

Definately compare the stone to Jareds if you still have time w/in the return policy. Keep in mind the ONLY comparison is the look of the diamond, not of the price. Jared''s will give you a crazy sales pitch, like saying WF isn''t reptuable and that an SIis the same as an I1 just because it is. (meaning no logical reason at all) They will insult the internet like crazy

i don't think this stone has much crown height.a flat top stone= less fire.
