How did I do? I finally bought my engagement ring.

I went to the Seybold building in Miami, after 6-8 months of researching online and information from you all. I finally landed with a 1.11 ct. princess cut. I wanted to go bigger, but the girlfriend told her mom that she thought a 1.25-1.5 ct, looks to big on her finger. When the mom told me this, I was happy for the pocketbook. I met with two jewelers in the Seybold building, and had them take the diamonds I chose up to Joseph Tenhagen (appraiser recommended by PCers). He told me that, of the diamonds I chose, there would be almost no difference in the appearance, just a difference to the pocketbook and the quality of diamond I was buying. The jeweler, who was selling the diamond I wanted, started out at $8,600 (including the setting). I talked for a while with him and he then went back to the owner, when he got back his price came down to $8,000. I told him I would pay cash $7,500. He went to check came back and said $7750, I told him no and stuck with $7,500, he went back to his boss once more and we settled at that price (after 45 minutes of back/forth). Maybe I could have gotten a lower price from him or gotten the same diamond online for less, but I was happy with the customer service and the way I was treated. I can always bring it back for cleaning as often as I want for free and check the prongs, and when it comes time to upgrade, they will upgrade at 100% of what I paid.

Here is the GSI report

And this is the setting, but it will be 14k yellow gold with white gold prongs. http://www.tiffany.com/Engagement/Item.aspx?GroupSKU=GRP10027#f+0/1002/0/0/0/1002

Any thoughts? I won't have any pictures until next week, when I go to pick up the diamond.

I think that sounds like a fair price. It would be impossible to really say much about the stone without magnified pictures, but if you studied images of ideal cut princess stones here, then you would have been prepared to know if the one you chose had a great cut. So hopefully that is the case! Sounds like you got them down to their bottom price which is good! We'll look forward to seeing pictures of your ring!

Anyone else or is it easier to get feedback with pictures?
Thanks!

You already bought it and sound happy with it. No one is going to comment on it further. If you have a return policy and want to know if you should keep it ... then you'll get comments.

I think you did very well. Without an ASET and other testing on the stone it is impossible to judge how really good of a performer the stone is, but you did see it in person and if you like it that is all that matters. Did that price include tax? You picked a stone that was at the shallow end of princess cuts with not too large of a table and faces up nicely....they don't give away those EX/EX's either. I don't know how much that setting would cost but to get the stone and setting in one place is a great advantage especially when setting a princess cut because those fine pointed corners can chip. ;(

I usually search on www.buydiamonddirect.com when looking for a stone. Only negative is that you can't pull up the cert, which seems very antiquated. But if you find a stone somewhere else, they you can go there and see if he has a better price on the same stone.

I have found that Ronni has the best prices and i purchased a 2.1c from him 6 years ago. White Flash had the same stone listed for $800 more. So, if you want a comparison at how well you did...note you pay a premium for that VVS clarity and here is the only one stone i found that semi-compares to yours with a vvs clarity and EX/EX...here is what I found (but I like your stone better with the smaller table and shallower depth):

37235032 1.17 G VVS1 GIA 73.3 73 Slightly Thick None Excellent Excellent None 5.84x5.76x4.22 1.01:1.00 $6,956.28

Here is another EX/EX at a great price
37324551 1.12 G VS2 GIA 69.2 72 Medium-Slightly Thick None Excellent Excellent Faint 6.03x5.77x3.99 1.05:1.00 $5,520.48

But I might have picked this 1.15 F VS1 because I like smaller tables and it is $1,000 less than the 1.17 G VVS1.
1.15 F VS1 GIA 70.8 66 Very Thin-Medium None Very Good Very Good None 5.97x5.93x4.20 1.01:1.00 $5,912.15

36751922 1.14 G VS1 GIA 72.7 73 Thick None Excellent Very Good None 5.85x5.72x4.16 1.02:1.00 $5,998.50

Soooo, looking at comparable stones, I think you did awesome, and your GF will love her ring...congrats!

It's not a GIA stone.

ETA:
OH! OOOPS! SORRY. You typed GSI but the certificate is GIA.

Nevermind my comments earlier.

YOU DID GREAT! SORRY. I thought you had gone off and bought a weirdo lab report diamond and overpaid for it and were now asking us if you did well.

I'd love pics, but just because it sounds beautiful. CONGRATULATIONS! :appl:

Sorry about the GSI comment, I have several things at work with those initials and I think it just carried over into the post.

Yes, I do have the option to return and also I can upgrade in the future and be given 100% of what I paid. The ring will be finished next week as they are having to put the V-prongs put on the Tiffany setting (from the link above). The v-prongs were a recommendation from my appraiser. He said if I didn't do v-prongs I ran a higher chance of the diamond getting chipped on the corners.

I hope to be picking up the ring by Thursday/Friday. What is the best environment to take pictures of the diamond in, so I can post on here ? Outdoors, indoors?

Natural light like outside on a sunny day. We always like to see the customary hand shot and flower shot. It sounds like a gorgeous ring congratulation. I'll be looking forward to photos.

Can't wait to see photos
