That is one awesome stone! I missed that one; thanks for pointing it out.

Confetti or drops of paint.

It's very Jackson Pollock!

I was looking at that one earlier today. So interesting.

I love it!! Wish he had more. :naughty:

Iridescent glitter!!!

That's awesome! reminds me of a funfetti cake... YUM

I do have to say I really liked that meteorite peridot, especially with the tubes that look like a meteor shower! how cool is that???

I considered this one: http://thegemtrader.com/Feb13ScapLazPage.htm Love it. It looks like it came from a very snazzy hen. Did a PSer buy it??? Hope so!

I thought that one was interesting too. The blue stands out well against the white backdrop.

It's a combination of sunstone and iolite. Looks like confetti!

Did anyone pick this up (or anything else from TGT this month)?
I love that confetti iolite. I considered getting it, but I'm trying to control myself because my stash of unset stones is too big already. :))

I've seen that iolite combo in RL, at a gem show, and it looks like colored glitter suspended in a resin (if I remember right). The flecks are shiny, like glitter. It looks like a totally man-made thing, very bizarre and cool.

I agree, Jackson Pollock must have made that!

ETA: had to add the chicken

Wow, iLander, you found its Mommy!!

And look at this one! I completely ignored it originally because I thought the lines were just plain ol' inclusions. They're iridescent and the peridot comes from a meteorite!

What a fabulous stone! That would be super to have just for looking at. It's also a quintessential Brad Payne gem.

American Thai had some similar material a few years ago. I have no idea if he still has it in stock.

Sooooo...regarding the TGT drop, I've been holding out on you all. I wanted to wait for the stone to come in to see whether it lived up to my expectations. I was a bit anxious as I've never spent this much on a gemstone, but it was perfect for me in every way (color, dispersion/brightness, size, and cut). It did not disappoint! Apologies for the bad photos - my apartment is very poorly lit.

I want to set it in a ring despite the fragility of the stone. It will only be worn on occasion, but when I wear it, I need to see it! It's not too small for a solitaire, and given the price of the stone, my budget is extremely limited. I should probably set it two-tone rather than all silver because it's such a special and expensive stone. Maybe rose gold for the head? Definitely can't afford gold for the whole thing. Also, no bezel because it's pretty dark already. Do you guys know any good prong-set ring designs that would suit a stone shaped like this?

Awesome! I can even see the dispersion in the pics! Good for you for getting a benitoite! I haven't worked up to that yet! :))

Thanks! I'm very excited about it. It's actually my second. The other one is smaller, scratched in 2 places on the crown (which the vendor disclosed and the price reflected), and a tad lighter than trade ideal, but it's really lovely and has amazing dispersion. I figured since supplies are drying up it would be good to get a higher-quality one now. Brad said it's getting increasingly difficult to source anything over 1/3 ct.

Yay!!!! I thought of you when I saw it on the drop, based on our last conversation! But I always get there after everyone else, so I figured I'd be too late. I'm so glad you got it!!!!

Thanks, Freke! I've been kicking myself for not buying the older triangular one he had on his site for a long time, and then it was sold. I didn't love any of the other ones until now!

It occurred to me that this shape is almost a cleftless heart. With that in mind, can anyone suggest some ring designs? I'm drawing a blank for once...I usually have a clear vision of exactly how I want a stone to be set (often before the stone even arrives). This one is giving me trouble.

It is a collector's stone and deserves something better. I would save up and use that time to come up with a worthy design for the benitoite.

I second Chrono. It's special & deserves something special. If you set it now, you'll spend money on a compromise, then spend it again if (when) you decide to upgrade the setting.

Nice stone & good for you for pulling the trigger!

+1. Truly a collector's stone and a lovely deeply coloured one.

If it's not possible to wait (or you want instant gratification) how about a lotus type ring from Sally at HoW? I'm not sure I've seen a trilliant one and I think it would be very unusual. OR

Have just found this ring (see below) BUT i would set your stone lower down and then have one of Sally's lovely pierced baskets underneath. It's sort of an amalgamation of a couple of her settings but I'd love to see a trilliant with the rope design (a subtle rope) around the sides. Mmmmmmmmm

LD,
Either a link or picture is missing. There is nothing "below". :cheeky:

Love that stone...Benitoite is on my list too...thats a nice example and I like the shape! Sweet!

Thanks, all! The problem is that I always want instant gratification, or at least semi-instant. Also, to be honest, I just don't think I'd put it in an expensive setting at any time. I have simple tastes and am too practical to spend a ton on both the gemstone and the setting. I balk at spending anything over $300 on either end. Clearly I've broken that rule with the stone, but I can't bring myself to do the same with the setting, and I doubt that will change when I have a better job (starting this July). I guess what I'm saying is that I wouldn't consider a simple ring with a gold head and silver shank to be a compromise. I've set plenty of stones that way, including my tsavorite from Gene in the Iolani setting from Sally, which is one of the very few stones I own that are close to trade ideal. (Perhaps my peridot from Roger is too, but peridot is plentiful and inexpensive.)

A lotus or something else by Sally is an interesting idea, but I'm a bit worried about sending it overseas, and I doubt it's the kind of stone Sally can make a setting for without seeing it. I've sent less expensive/more easily replaceable stones to her without issues, but I don't know what I'd do if this got lost or stolen. So I'm not sure. I'm afraid that any other style of ring would probably require CADs, which would probably be even more expensive.

LD, if you see this thread again, I'd like to see the link that disappeared! I agree with setting it low.

It may look nice with side diamonds, either pears or the HW-style tapered baguettes.

I really like this design, owned by someone here (can't remember who) and posted in another thread:

_3900.jpg

This would be lovely in rose gold but would definitely be a CAD project, and I don't see any easy way to make it two-tone. If I can find a decent price, it could work out.

I think that Distract's ring from Daniel M. I don't see how it can possibly be a two toned setting as well but why does it need to be so?

Because gold is too expensive and the shank would need to be silver to be acceptable for me!
