to all you ladies who have had their diamonds reset numerous times, were you afraid that the diamond would be chipped? I am having a 3 stone ring made for my 3 carat EC and I am scared,(more like terrified) about something happening. I know all about insuring it, but I REALLY had to fast talk husband into this and assured him that "women do it ALL the time--no big deal". IF something happens I am sure he will never let me make another jewelry decision again!!(nor would I want to!!) I also know that I WAYYY overpaid to have this ring made but it was a jewelry store where we have our EBEL watches serviced and he feels comfortable with the store. the quotes from victor and leon and 2 others were less expensive, but he didn't like the thought of sending the stone off.this setting is being made by the dimensions of my diamond and then they will set it when it comes in. how do you guys deal with the fear and the WAITING? 2 weeks and 4 days of waiting and agonizing that I made the last worst decision (will it fit? are the side stones the right color and size? did they make the ring to fit my finger? did I over pay for nothing? should I have left it alone? should I just have gone to the mall and been done with it?(( lol)) let me know how to stop obsessing so maybe I can enjoy this ring when it is done. thanks for listening

It sounds like you need some hand-holding and self-confidence. This is not a hand-holding day for me unless I'm getting paid to do it, and self-confidence isn't something I can tell you where to buy.

Diamonds do get chipped. It's not that common but it happens.
How thick is your girdle?
And if your setting has pave you will need to baby it.

Take your engagement ring off when you are in the house. Only wear it out. Do not shower, bath dogs/kids, garden, workout, wash dishes, clean, swim, etc with the ring on.

Use common sense. Learn how to clean weekly and then examine your ring (get a loupe, they're cheap) yourself and do it every so often (monthly) to make sure all is well.

If it does chip, the insurance will take care of it.

You are a full partner in your marriage. The ring is an object. And it is insured. Your husband doesn't have to "let" you do anything. And if the ring does chip, it doesn't mean you have to turn into June Cleaver and never make a jewelry decision again.

As for the waiting... keep yourself busy and distracted and the time will fly.

As for chipping while setting. Again, it's not common but it happens. Yes I was vaguely worried. I had the stone appraised before and after setting, and that was all I could do, coupled with making sure I picked very good jewelers.

Does the store handling your setting doing it onsite? Or are they sending it out?

Also, it is helpful to ask us for advice before you do things. Otherwise all we are doing is stressing you about about "could have dones."

mainly I am just worried about chipping the stone during setting. they are doing it onsite and I suppose I will just have to trust their benchwork. I am always VERY careful and the loupe is my best friend!! lol! there is no pave to worry about and the only thing I do bad is too much cleaning of my ring. the setting I picked out is a Joshua J 3 stone emerald cut. sooo I just have to wait I guess..

That sounds lovely. Three stones are so elegant.
What is your girdle thickness on your center stone?

As for on-site setting, that's what you want. So that's good.

the girdle is medium to slightly thick.

Your diamonds are far more likely to be chipped by you when your hand accidentally knocks up against something or is dropped on a hard floor than it is by an experienced diamond setter. As long as you have insurance, it should be fine regardless. Have you seen settings made by the same person who is making your ring? I'd honestly be more worried about whether it is up to Victor or Steven quality than I would about a setting accident. But I love a 3 stone EC and look forward to seeing it!

Okay, sorry to cause you unnecessary concern. The pictures of his settings look very nice! However, I would absolutely want him setting the stones due to prong work being so important. A master ring maker needs to set the stone. Diamonds are shipped all the time. It is not a big deal at all unless you have a 10 ct stone and don't have access to something like Malca Amit for secure transport.

Try not to worry so much OP, it's not healthy Lol. I know you are looking for some reassurance here. I've had many diamonds set many times, and I've never had any problems with chips or nicks. That doesn't mean it can't happen but I don't think you should loose sleep over this. Use this waiting time anticipating how much you will love your new ring, it sounds lovely!!
