My ring is set relatively high, is a princess, in platinum, etc. and yet I am NOT NICE to it. I wear it all the time - during marathons, weight lifting, washing dishes, cooking, sleeping, etc. I've banged it on all sorts of things - my car window when I used to smoke, my counters, my headboard, etc. I don't mind the resulting patina, but now I keep reading that princess cuts are weak, etc. I have a hard time picturing myself taking my ring off more often though (I feel awkward without it).

I'm about to have a halo added to it. Now I'm all worried - should I be taking it off more? Am I just asking for trouble or is it sturdier than I fear? (I've had it on for 7 years, for what it's worth.)

You can't beat up pave like you describe and expect it to last, so you will likely have to change how you wear it when you reset.

Have you had it examined recently with a loupe to make sure there is no damage to the stone?

I do not wear my rings doing anything heavy with my hands.

As long as you have it insured...

Ditto- I take my rings off for most activities- like sleep, gym, dishes and cooking, and cleaning.

I'm the exact opposite. I only wear my ring when going out for social events/dates/work functions, etc.

If I'm at home or puttering around, I don't wear it.

You definitely should not wear your ring when weight lifting or sleeping. I think it really wears down the metal and prongs over time.

Your ring is beautiful by the way!

Thanks! Maybe I'll go ahead and start getting in the pattern of wearing it less so I'm used to it by the time I reset it (although something tells me when I get it back I'll be paranoid about it anyway :P).

I totally agree with the others. If your concerned about not being to stop your bad habits ;)) perhaps you could consider setting your stone lower in the new halo or adding a bezel as well to protect the more delicate corners. The best thing, as the others have said is to begin learning to remove your pretty rings for rougher activities. Its also a good idea to have one spot that you always place your rings when you take them off, so that while you are getting used to removing them you won't lose them in the process. Happy to hear that you have insurance!
