How can you tell is the GIA cert belongs to the diamond you bought?

In light of the GIA inscribed discussion in another thread, this reminded me of something I''ve been thinking about since buying my diamond.

How can we know for sure the GIA cert the jeweler is giving us belongs to the diamond we bought? For instance, my jeweler sent me a copy of the GIA cert, but how would I ever know if it belongs to the diamond I bought?

Thank you

Switching stones is actually extremely rare and most jewellers have been in the business a long time and are very careful and conscientious individuals who work hard to get and maintain their good name, so the chances are slim anway. However it can happen on rare occasion, so what you can do is to get an independant appraiser to verify the diamond matches the report. You can also buy a loupe and if there are any inclusions plotted on the report, then you can get to know your own diamond in this way and then should you need to leave the ring for any reason, you will be able to identify it. Also some jewellers will go through the diamond with you and make note of any characteristics/ inclusions. But your best bet if you are concerned, is to get an appraiser to check the diamond and accompanying report to give you peace of mind.

Appraiser's listing so you can find one in your area.

The GIA report is intended as backup and support for the trust you are placing in your jeweler, not as a substitute for it. It’s your jeweler, not GIA who is telling you that it’s a particular grade. If you don’t fully believe them, or you otherwise want a second opinion, find an independent expert to assist. There's a list of them at the top of the page under 'resources' and answering this question is a standard part of almost every new purchase appraisal. If you really distrust the seller for whatever reason, take your business elsewhere.

That''s why I like diamonds that are not totally IF. If you have an inclusion here or there, and the GIA report shows it, it''s like a fingerprint for your stone. Also, the physical dimensions must be exact as well as to what they''re matching up with on the report. However, the inclusion chart is really your best bet.
