How big is too big for a MRB center stone?

This leads me to the question of the day: what do you think is the max “reasonable” or “esthetically-pleasing” size for a MRB center stone? Set as a solitaire? Set as a halo?

How big is too big?

Have a great day everyone! Looking forward to hearing your opinions ;)2
As big as my wallet will allow which ain't saying much...;(

Omg same!! I was going to post it but you beat me to it :D

@ice empress I love your new diamond and ring and think that it looks amazing on you, it practically takes up your entire finger. But we know that DSS is real and if something else is that you desire which also happens to be in your budget, then I guess why not. My only advice is that you try to enjoy your current ring as is for whatever time you have it and not focus solely on what’s next because that is a never ending game.

Here is a pic with a few large diamonds for comparison:

The largest is just over 8cts, the closest to my ring is a 3ct diamond and between the middle and the index fingers is a 5ct stone.

So which one did you choose?

I think she's also wearing the 12ct MRB in this pic:

LP_12ct.jpg

@Phoenix wow your friend has absolutely incredible jewelry!! Though she’s quite slight, her MRB and studs look stunning on her, and surprisingly not overbearing at all.

Thanks for finding the photos and getting her to agree to sharing them with the community!

I think your new ring is just lovely & the proportions on your hand are perfect. But as @motownmama says, it’s your hand & you should rock whatever rock you like!

Can I ask why your mind has already turned to upgrading only a few weeks after getting your new ring? Is there something you don’t enjoy about it? I think my husband would be offended if I had raised this deal so soon after getting a beautiful new (& very sunbstantial) engagement ring. But i’m English & our brains aren’t wired to upgrade our rings - we have to be thankful for what we’re given usually

Great question! I hesitated to bring it up with my BF at all, but since I believe honesty is so important, I thought I’d at least share with him my completely unfiltered impression. He has been such an angel; so patient and kind. It helps that I chose the diamond and setting myself, so I was less afraid to offend him.

Frankly, I think he finds the whole thing comical... We both realize that pricescope significantly skews one’s perception of reality, but he is humouring me nonetheless.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate my ring. It's not that I don’t think she is breathtakingly beautiful! I am most grateful and think she is perfect in so many ways. I know I am a very very lucky gal.

Rather, because the setting and halo are so delicate, and the ACA so icy white, I feel the ring could be more substantial and still feel and look very light and elegant. IMO, there is still room to go before a larger MRB becomes obnoxious, because the composition will still be graceful, chic, balanced and fluid overall.

I am of no help at all because when you’re comparing a delicately created VC masterpiece and a larger (mm spread) diamond my eyeballs just cross and I can only mumble “yes. Yep. Yes.”

Your current ring is a dream! VC does some pretty amazing pave magic. I wouldn’t change a thing. Except maybe add a knock-out eternity if you want to up the punch factor! Can’t wait to see what you both decide to do!

@SimoneDi that is some very wise advice. Thank you for the reminder =)2

I love that blingtastic photo! What size are your ring finger and center stone carat for reference?

It’s funny, because I thought the 8ct might have been be a 6ct before I read your description. I imagine it might be because the stones are sitting in the valleys between your fingers rather than mounted high up on a setting.

7ct on my size 5 finger... perfect size I think :lol-2:

Amazing!! I’m so so happy you posted this. She is beyond stunning!! :kiss2:

What size is your finger? Do you know the diameter of the stone?

Would you possibly be able to post some more pictures? Perhaps some real-life perspective photos from further away? Some side views? The more the better. I’m sure I speak for us all when I say we would be most appreciative.

Thanks a million! I’m really looking forward to seeing more pics of your breathtaking jewel!

Ring size is 5.5, ring center stone in the photo is 2.1ct.

Diamonds will definitely look different in pics vs real life and I think that diamond “size” can vary widely based on individual perceptions.

For reference, below is a 5ct OEC that I tried on recently.

I’m loving your honesty & shall have my dribble ready for the upgrade pictures in the future! :lickout:

Just went setting browsing with @Starfacet and I had to try this baby on 10ct radiant on my 4.5 finger. I honestly couldn’t imagine doing anything with it besides walking. I think 5ct looks great on most people (center stone only :lol-2:) this sucker cost more than our house! I think 7.5ct will be huge but if you want it do it! I think getting a nice tennis bracelet or studs instead of upgrade would be nicer

What a blingtastic ring!!

I hope you don’t mind me using your picture as an example of why I personally don’t think fancy cuts work on my own ring finger.

The fancy cuts (e.g. EC, oval, cushion, etc) are brilliant at distributing the carat weight around by increasing length rather than depth, making them more wearable in the larger carat weights.

However, because the web between my ring and little finger is so slanted and acutely angled, all fancy cuts inevitably sit diagonally on my finger, which I personally think looks sloppy. I’m a stickler for symmetry and evenness, and the fact that a rectangular or oval shape wouldn’t sit parallel along the length of my finger would bother me far too much.

hello @ice empress I think pictures are sometimes deceiving. I have seen Missy's diamond in real life, it's HUGE, it's gorgeous and it's the most blingy stone I have ever seen. For me at the 5ct range it's perfect, I, like other's think if you go above this then an EC is the best choice, also a royal asscher/asscher would be perfect. I suppose because these are square and rectangle that aesthetically it looks better.. not sure WHY I think this but many diamonds one sees over 5 ct are fancy cuts. I'd love to have this problem btw!

Great advice!! Im pretty sure 7.5ct would make me feel quite self-conscious, meaning I might not wear it comfortably or frequently.

Since I’m still thinking MRB, perhaps I would do something in the 5-5.5ct range and put it in a halo again, as this wouldn’t add depth/height.

One more note... most stars/celebrities do not wear rounds. I think it is because they can afford such large stones and fancy shapes just look better larger:)

IHMO: Not 'Too Big', but only just: WWW - perhaps my common-sense limit says that a ring is something that fits well within the one finger width; 12mm width/diameter be more relevant than the weight...

On the other hand,
The RBC version is something else... & there appear to be a few of them out there WWW

Nice game, this!

For me it's also about the height... I like my rings as low as possible to begin with and prefer cathedral settings to avoid a flying saucer look. From a certain size upwards An MRB will get too high and the setting will be a challenge

ABSOLUTELY. seems minor and irrelevant but makes the biggest difference to me.

For me, a low set 4 carat OEC is my max. For an MRB probably 3.5 is max. Also must be low set. I like high colored MRBs so 3.5 carats would look like a headlight always on. On OEC is more like a disco ball and a wee bit more discreet.

The headlight is a good analogy for large MRBs. They really do grab your attention in a way that large examples of other cuts (like Emerald, cushions, OECs) do not.

My own personal opinion is similar to yours. I think that around a 3.5 carat well-cut MRB is the largest that most women could pull off as an everyday ring (like most E-rings are intended to be) while remaining "in good taste." This is highly dependent on overall finger/hand size and length, but beyond that I think they take up too much space on the finger, both in width and in height off of the finger, to look well-proportioned.

Largest diamond I've seen in person was a few months into my "diamond education" earlier this year at a science gala. The wearer was a very classy and very very (very) rich elderly woman. She is a very famous scientist (now retired) who most people in the science community would know, and her husband is an oil executive. I was introduced to her by my boss and, after the general niceties, commented on how beautiful her ring was. Well, obviously she was a jewelry person, because that opened her right up. :) She told me all about it. It was a very well-cut (my opinion, just judging by the way it sparkled even in the dimly-lit room) MRB (although probably 60/60 style since the ring was from the 70s or 80s) that was colorless and a tad over 3 carats, in a beautiful cathedral solitaire setting. Not sure of her ring size, but it took up probably 70-80% of her finger, and was about the width of her fingernail. Definitely a large diamond and commanded a presence, but was, in my opinion, in no way gaudy or ostentatious whatsoever.

Everyone is free to spend there money however they wish, and I never judge people based on the way they choose to spend their money. Hey, if they've earned it, they can burn it in a fire pit for all I care. But I will say that MRBs over a certain point really do look like doorknobs on the hand. As others have mentioned in this thread, that's probably why all of the celebrities wear emerald cuts, as larger carat weights typically look better in elongated step-cuts.

@ice empress I just saw your ring in the JOTW thread. I think it is absolutely beautiful as it is. A breathtaking VC creation. I'm really having a hard time wrapping my head around why you would want to trade it in so soon after it is created. I mean, the WF upgrade policy isn't going anywhere, and getting a significantly larger diamond would mean that you would have to trash the custom VC setting (which, IMO, would be a darn shame). Why not wear it for a few years and see how you like it? If you really have the itch to go larger down the line, then you'll have a wonderful idea for a 5 or 10 year anniversary present.

I like the way your husband thinks. A very logical man. :) Why not spend the money on some other jewelry pieces (tennis bracelet, pendant, studs, etc.) that would balance out that beautiful ring? Then you'll have a beautifully-proportioned ring and a full diamond ensemble, as opposed to a giant rock that you may feel uncomfortable wearing out in certain situations due to the attention that it will most certainly draw.

Anyway, just my $0.02. :)

Just went to see your ring. Didn’t realize jotw. Ok. The emotions and high from the ring are intense right now. You got bit by the diamond bug hard. You need to back away and just enjoy your ring and get off PS for a month or six. :lol-2: I understand but I am saying this for your own (and your fiancé’s) good. You are officially on ban island, in the nicest way. :lol-2: You are really hurting your beautiful ring’s feelings. She was just born and you are already planning her demise.

So true because PS is TOXIC :evil2:...

Lol. This thread and this comment led me to look back at a YouTube video I watched in the beginning of my e-ring search, that compares different-sized diamonds on the hand. I distinctly remember thinking "0.7 to 0.85 will be perrrrrfect. Maybe 1ct. " and being shocked at the hugeness of the 2+ carat offerings. My how my perspective has changed!

Some key quotes from that video :
1.33ct - "this for whatever reason is where diamonds really start to look BIG for me"
1.5ct - "At this carat weight you are a hiiigh roller"
2.75-3 - "This is huge. At this point you are really just showing off. But if you have the money, why not spend it on a diamond she will wear for the rest of her life!"

All undeniably accurate points. Lol.

I know... she was just born and I am already planning her demise. I feel bad now... :cry2:

PS is definitely both a blessing and a curse. I have no doubts that I would have never been able to comission such a beautiful creation without the discovery of PS. But on the flip side, it leaves you always wanting more...

My loose plan for now is to upgrade in 5 years, which coincidentally will also be a milestone birthday. I will enjoy her for a while still... :kiss2:

Strangely, I’ve never felt the desire to own a large variety of jewelry pieces. I’ve only ever wanted a nice engagement ring, pair of diamond studs, and eternity band. That being said, as others @Rad_Fan and @LLJsmom have mentioned, PS is toxic and that could all change. Lol.

Yeah.. don’t get into colored stones then. It’s a whole new can of worms...
Really pretty worms though :p
