How big is too big for a MRB center stone?

I think your is absolutely perfect for your finger. I personally do not like huge rounds as I think they can look like a door knob or possibly fake. Now, a big fancy cut like an EC or cushion.... screams class in my opinion. At the end of the day it’s your ring and you should go with what you are comfortable with. Fun position to be in!!

I would say unreservedly that there is absolutely no point having such a huge and stunning ring and only wearing it occasionally because you feel self conscious, uncomfortable or awkward. Why have have such a treasure of you aren't enjoying it to the max.

Great advice!! Im pretty sure 7.5ct would make me feel quite self-conscious, meaning I might not wear it comfortably or frequently.

Since I’m still thinking MRB, perhaps I would do something in the 5-5.5ct range and put it in a halo again, as this wouldn’t add depth/height.

Purely subjective, but I would say 2.5 carat MRB for my size 5 finger.

Just my personal opinion, but I find large rounds (like above 3.5-4ish carats) to just look very round. Like, because they sit so high off the finger, the big circle just kind of jumps out at you. From up close, and from across the room. WHICH I guess could also be a good thing, depending on what you are going for. Agree with others that a giant antique EC or cushion would be v. classy. I personally would be looking for a giant antique pear (oh the search!), but that is 100% my own taste bias and obsession with them speaking... :)

In defense of the rounds though. This thread reminds me of an IG post I saw a while ago that was showing off an amazeballs 5ct OEC in an intricate art deco setting. Some user tagged who I assume is her dearly beloved, "Babe!", he responds, "No."

Alas, it can only be a pipe dream for me now, sadly...at least a 7ct+ G VS2.

I will try and take a pic some time. She's not keen on having her pics taken, so I will try but no promises.:). I think I did post such a pic somewhere on PS. Not sure where. If I can find it, I'll def re-post it here.

Re whether the size is too large to be worn comfortably, I think there are several factors at play here:

1) age: the older you are the less you care what other people think, lol

2) time: you'd get used to wearing larger and larger bling over time, the more you wear your bling, the larger you'd feel comfortable going bigger and bigger

3) your social circle / the environment that you're in: in my social circle, there's only that friend that sports such larger bling. But where I live (in SG and HK), there are plenty of bigger, blingier jewellery and LOTS of Hermes Birkins & Kellys, even crocodile ones. People don't really stare, not too many people seem to care. Sometimes, they'll glance but discreetly. People have plenty of nice sports cars too. One of my neighbours has 4 sports cars in their front yard. One, a bit further from where I am, has 20 luxury cars. And if you know anything about cars in SG, you'll know that they come with a premium. I am the only one in my neighbourhood that doesn't own a car, lol. Anyway, I digress, but you get the point.

4) your attitude: last but not least. If you are planning on wearing such a large showy piece, you've got to have the confidence carrying it off. Age does come into play here. So may I suggest maybe you wait a while before upgrading or perhaps upgrade it slowly over time, taking advantage of WF's generous upgrade policy. So perhaps instead of going from 100 to 300 in a few seconds, why not upgrade to a 5ct first and then slowly later to a 7.5ct ?

PS. A 5ct halo'ed in an Emilya will look even more blingtastic than a 7.5ct solitaire, I'd say. The halo with lots of (super)ideal cut melee will give out lots of splintering fire that will attract even more attention. My 3.50ct pear in a halo is a lot more firey and blingy than my 5.318ct RB.

Thanks for sharing your insight from personal experience! I’m glad to hear about the fire and bling of your “smaller” haloed stone compared to that of your 5.318 solitaire.

In all likelihood, I anticipate I would probably start/end with a 5ish ct in a halo rather than a 7+ solitaire for 2 reasons:

1) I think the 7ct might be getting too tall/high off the finger
2) I like the way delicate and thin halos frame, accentuate, and elevate the center stone.
 
I am in the same boat, I can’t get my wife to agree to a 4ct round ACA as it is just too big. But a 4ct oval or antique cushion? All day long.

There comes a point where a round becomes too big and too flashy in my opinion.
 
For me it's also about the height... I like my rings as low as possible to begin with and prefer cathedral settings to avoid a flying saucer look. From a certain size upwards An MRB will get too high and the setting will be a challenge
 
I was just looking at celebrity engagement rings on-line (PSer ****!), and in reading this thread now it occurs to me that most of the diamond engagement rings were not MRB, but huge stones of other shapes. The MRB stones tended to not be more than 3 carats. I think that it might be due to the height of a setting for a MRB diamond, sort of might look like a huge dot?

I'll never be able to say how much is too big for me as I'll never seriously ponder that question, but I think a 3-4 carat on my 5.25 finger would be max. It'd be fun to test that. ;)2 I'd probably stay smaller and get some additional pieces, large diamond studs, or a colored stone piece with an emerald or ruby.

I have a colleague that rocks an approx 5 carat round. I think her finger is probably a 5. It fits her, her personality, age, lifestyle, our geographic area, and net worth. :P2 Its a personal decision for sure. If you feel you can rock it, DO IT. No one opinions should matter. =)2
 
I did say in another thread, that I didn’t think I’d feel comfortable with anything over 3cts.

However, then I meet Missy and her fabulous Bea :lol:

The rest is history, and now Bella (formerly Bea) sits on my finger. I’m a size 6 1/2, and I can honestly say, this is as big as I’m going. 4.56 cts OEC 10.36 x 10.58 x 6.8.

Anything substantially bigger, and I’m not sure I’d wear it as much as Bella, apart from worrying about unwanted attention. In the UK, Bella is considered huge, and I’ve never met anyone with a ring this large.

I tried on an EC at Sotheby’s that was 10.5 cts, it was lovely, but not something I could comfortably wear every day.

@ice empress, I found this pic. Her 12ct MRB ring is actually top heavy, is prob set a bit too loose also, and goes sideways often. You can also kinda see her 6ct each earrings.

I'll see if I have a pic of her wearing her 20ct radiant.

I seem to recall, not sure if I am right, that there's another person with a larger ACA. Someone will chime in to correct me if I am wrong.
 
Of course DSS is a real thing, but I think I would max out at a 5ct MRB myself (size 7 finger).
 
I don't think I could go over 10.8-11 mm on a MRB or OEC for a solitaire. (ring size 4.75)

Personally, I really like my 2.4ct current diamond. Perfect for everyday wear. However, there are already moments where I have DSS and would like to go to 3.5ct! (Shhhhh don't tell the FI...yet) I think 3.5ct-4 would be my max for daily wear as my finger is a 3.5-3.75. But for fancy events, I would go up to a 5!! Better start saving!
 
Before I say anything, I want to reiterate that no one else’s opinion should matter!

However, I think any RBC over 2 carats ... looks ... meh. I actually think 2 carats is too big. Just don’t like the look of it.

But for those with the big diamonds - keep wearing them with pride! It’a a personal thing.

I’m just one stranger’s opinion. I live in a very affluent area. I think 7.5 ctw MRB looks garish - but that’s ME - you like it? Rock it!!! To me your current ring looks amazing!!!! I wouldn’t go bigger. Maybe a different piece of jewelry altogether!
 
I think your new ring is just lovely & the proportions on your hand are perfect. But as @motownmama says, it’s your hand & you should rock whatever rock you like!

Can I ask why your mind has already turned to upgrading only a few weeks after getting your new ring? Is there something you don’t enjoy about it? I think my husband would be offended if I had raised this deal so soon after getting a beautiful new (& very sunbstantial) engagement ring. But i’m English & our brains aren’t wired to upgrade our rings - we have to be thankful for what we’re given usually :lol:
 
Just went setting browsing with @Starfacet and I had to try this baby on 10ct radiant on my 4.5 finger. I honestly couldn’t imagine doing anything with it besides walking. I think 5ct looks great on most people (center stone only :lol-2:) this sucker cost more than our house! I think 7.5ct will be huge but if you want it do it! I think getting a nice tennis bracelet or studs instead of upgrade would be nicer

@ice empress I love your new diamond and ring and think that it looks amazing on you, it practically takes up your entire finger. But we know that DSS is real and if something else is that you desire which also happens to be in your budget, then I guess why not. My only advice is that you try to enjoy your current ring as is for whatever time you have it and not focus solely on what’s next because that is a never ending game.

The largest is just over 8cts, the closest to my ring is a 3ct diamond and between the middle and the index fingers is a 5ct stone.
