Once again, I'm thinking I need to do something to keep my pretties safe in the house. (see my thread yesterday about hiding jewelry  )

I did try a search, but found little about safes we can buy for our homes. So, my questions are:
If you have a safe, what kind?
Do you like it?
Is it easy to use/access?
Is it bolted to the wall or floor?
Was it difficult to install?

If you have an answer to any of the above questions, or comments of your own that you feel would be helpful, I'd sure appreciate it.

Unfortunately, my timing, as usual, is off. We are going away soon, so I'll be using the bank safe deposit box. It's great for vacations, but not so much for daily use. I just would like another option in the future, so I don't have to keep using the sewing kit!

thanks,
KK

Ha! I read the title of this thread and thought you had just arrived "home safe" from travels somewhere :)

I've read that a good safe is bolted down to the floor or in the wall but that might not be an option. I stayed I'm a hotel last month where the entire top drawer of the dresser was an irremovable heavy-duty electronic safe. I thought that was pretty cool.

I agree with you KaeKae that the bank vault is a hassle. I love to wear my jewelry, and I like to have quick access to it. Therefore, I took the initiative and purchased a safe for our home! I went to Sports Authority and purchased a heavy gun safe with a combination; it is nearly impossible to remove it from the home. It is easy for me to get in & out of, plus my jewelry insurance company gave me a discount on my policy!

I would absolutely recommend purchasing a home safe. It is hard to misplace items if you develop a habit of always placing your items in the safe!

Hi KaeKae, I highly recommend a home safe as though nothing is 100% secure/foolproof it is a pretty darn good way to go IMO. I posted this before but here's a pic of our home safe which is bolted to the wall. It wouldn't be easy for a criminal to take the time and try to get my jewelry from the safe or break the safe from the wall. And as an added bonus all my jewelry is in one place. :))

I like to keep my jewelry in trays so I have a gun safe from Costco in the garage. I also have a Gardall wall safe in the studs in the house. Wall safes don't hold much because they aren't very deep. Check to see if you have 4 or 6" studs and then search safe depths. Probably 2.5-3.5" because the safe wall is usually an 1". Of course there are jewelry safes that offer better storage, but I thought they were too much $$ when I was researching.

I'm not going to go into great detail, but our safe is bolted to the floor somewhere hidden. We got a fire rated one, but it wasn't terribly expensive. Burglary is not common at all where we live, and this would be something that would take time to find/remove/break into. It's not terribly convenient, because of it's placement, but we keep documents in it, and just a bit of jewelry, as I don't have much. It's worth it for peace of mind IMO. I am a great misplacer of small expensive items. :nono: I can't seem to ever find my diamond earrings. For all I know, they are actually in the safe.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I'd never thought about a gun safe. Between the size and strength of the thing, it makes sense, though. I've been looking on line a bit, and boy do the possibilities vary in size, price and strength of the box itself. I'm also trying to figure out just where would I put it, to make it less obvious.

When I get back from from our trip, I have a new project. For now, my necklace and other more sentimental items are at the bank. I actually spent a couple minutes in the private room, when I dropped off my things today. I'd left more in that drawer than I remembered, including a ring I thought I'd truly lost, as opposed to the necklace that I knew I'd stashed somewhere 'safe.' I really need to get most of those things home. Just have to figure out how to make it work so it's not too inconvenient, even in my own house.
