my 2 cents
a suggestion to holloway =)
i think your fantastic patented mathematical calculation (Holloway Cut Adviser) should be an iphone app.
it would be great to use the app to check for dimensions while on the go.

how much would you be prepared to pay?

Hi Gary.
Personally I will pay up to 5usd for the app.
Partly because one could still access the app through the safari browser on the iphone.

However more importantly, there is no app for diamond calculations.
I did a search for "gems" "diamonds" and "jewel" but there are no apps (out of like 50000+) made that even mimics HCA (even know i know the HCA is covered by a patent)

I think there is tremendous potential in making a HCA app for people. Many people will definitely be interested because it is so useful on the go.
I believe one of the objectives of the HCA is to weed out poor cut diamonds and an app makes it so convenient at the store to reject diamonds and focus on the good one.

However I see another advantage to such an app. It is a wonderful marketing tool. Alot of people will learn more about HCA and the concept of IS and ASET images (which i only learned about after reading PS. Before I just knew about the basic 4 C). I see opportunity for people to get to know who you are, to connect with this forum and ultimately bring reputation and business back to you.

There will always be newbies buying diamonds and there will always be a demand for such an app.
One way to see if an app is worthwhile making is to see how many hits you get on the HCA page. If the number of hits is always growing, you will know that there is a demand for the HCA.

I am not sure if anyone suggested an HCA iphone app yet. I have not searched this entire forum site as yet.

This just sincerely input that I wanted to share.

=)

Excellent idea.
When I was shopping I considered bringing my laptop and hoping there was a WiFi connection so I could check the HCA in the jewelry store.

I've asked this question years ago. Since, Garry's patented the application, and he could do it.

But...as you say...now that hand held devices have evolved the way they have (I guess), you can bring up the web as it is on the go, and bring up the HCA as is. So...

I'm sure Garry would like to know why you'd pay $5 or anything for the app, since you can use it without the app?

Otherwise, Garry, maybe this would be a cool app for those who would have not otherwise have found it?

Me...I just use my phone for calls, still, thank you very much...but you don't want to know (and I haven't figured out how it happened twice in a row) how my teenage son spent over $200 in internet expenses on our Verizon phone...

I would absolutely LOVE to have HCA as an iPhone app. Plug the numbers in right on the spot, no need for internet access, it would be fantastic. With an iPod Touch, I''d put install it right now if it existed. I''d certainly pay $10 or even $20 to have it (although coding-wise it shouldn''t require that much work to warrant such a cost).

Something that really ought to be done, to be sure!

I don''t have an iphone, but that would be cool.

I think alot of users would love it as an iphone app!

well
1) it is his invention/patent so he could/should makes some money for his effort.
however since its free on the internet, he might make it free on the iphone if he wishes to

2) why will i pay?
the app can be set up such that its a program that runs in the iphone without the need for a 3g of wifi connection (safari needs that connection)
it will be way way faster to use an app dedicated for HCA instead of having to key in numbers on safari and finger twiddle to zoom in and out of the page etc etc.
its just troublesome. surfing on the safari of the iphone is great but not super great.

=)

Of particular interest in having it as an app, not only is it faster for an iPhone on 3G, but for an iPod Touch that has no internet access at all without free wi-fi, it''d be essential.

I think this is a fantastic idea! I would get it!

I agree!! Garry, when can we expect to see the HCA app

make it a blackberry app also!

I suspect that this would not be a difficult thing to write given the amount of work that’s already in place and I agree that it may be a way to finally actually get paid for the work behind the HCA.

I recommend $10-$20 as the price.

This will seriously annoy the local jewelers but not nearly as much as, say, if ‘Pricescope your diamond’ were to be made into an app.

Neil my initial interest, goal, and long time campaign in this diamond cut quality thing was to improve cut quality.
With the help of a lot of technology improvements, some better lab cut grading advances and maybe a tiny bit from me via ideal-scope and HCA - it seems cut quality has come a long way in 10 years.

I would like to get a return on HCA as the patent has costs a lot of money (and continues to - but that is an evolving tale of its own).
I will seriously look into it.
There is no doubt that retail stores still have a long way to go.
