I’m a recently engaged consumer --ugh I hate that term consumer because any place that treats me as one wont get my money :} -- I much prefer the term computer geek :}
I work as a computer network specialist/consultant for a small consulting firm.
Which is real world terms means that I do just about everything that has to do with computers in one form or another :}
I never gave gems much thought until I was searching for an e-ring which is a story in itself.
Now I am afraid I am hooked on colored gems and will have something else besides guns and computers to spend all my money on.

oh in case anyone is wondering I am in my 30s and male and my nick stands for storm rider a nick I picked up because I love storms especially tornados.

I love storms too. A friend of mine and I like to fly around the fringes of them in light planes. The savage beauty of them and the bumpy ride is a thrill.

What does your tag line VERITAS VINCIT, A CRUCE SALUS mean?

That sounds awesome
................................

VERITAS VINCIT = Truth Conquers
A CRUCE SALUS = Salvation from the cross
Both Latin

Love the tag line, and the avatar. It really jumps out at ya.

Regarding storms, Sarasota has the official title of the "Lightning Capitol of the United States". It has the most amount of lightning strikes per square mile in the entire U.S.

So, around here, we're careful about saying "If I'm lying, may lightning strike me".

Oh storms are so cool! The only thing I wished we had more of here are storms.

strmrdr, here are a few pics of a lenticular (sp?) cloud we experienced here recently. It was breathtaking.

Kmom, You're so cool!

K-mom, what *IS* a lenticular cloud? How often do you get them?

Ok...so I got impatient and did some research. I like this website:

http://www.crystalinks.com/lenticular.html

Awesome clouds!!!
I love those pics they are now my wallpaper on one of my home computers.

AGBF, that's a cool site you posted. Here's another. Our cloud is also featured on this site, taken by a real photographer and posted here - see the Dec. 1 post.

I cannot take credit for those photos. My girlfriend took those, lucky me, since I didn't have my camera while I was on the road that day.

figured Id add this here since I had it typed out anyway.

Well a couple years ago I went looking for a cross necklace for my at that time Girlfriend and fell for rubies.
I found her one and went back to not paying attention to them.
Then this year I went looking for an engagement ring for her and started learning.
Im an information hound and I read everything I could find on the web about them.
The weird thing is that I didn’t find pricescope until after Id bought it.
It was while I was looking for rubies for the wedding band that I found pricescope.
Which led to me finding diamondtalk which led me to find Michael E. who I had put together her wedding band.
I contacted him about custom cutting the rubies for it.
Turned out that in that size he couldn’t cut them for me at a competitive price but hunted down a source for high quality naturals in my price/size range.
He now posts here off and on when there is something he can help out with.
Anyway that got me interested in gem cutting so now Im learning as much as possible about gems and gem cutting and am even working on my own cutting designs and bugging Michael about them!
I try and not to be too big a pest but I bet he wonders what he got himself into!
I would love to be able to cut them myself but that isn’t likely to happen due to nerve problems in my hands.
I wont be able to do it so I will have to settle on having Michael cut them for me.
But that doesn’t mean I cant learn as much as possible about it :}

Getting back to diamonds for a second I more or less had her ring custom made from several pieces I selected.
I found the diamond then found the band and the head and had them put together by a local jeweler.
To buy something similar at a mall store would cost 2x what I paid and 1.5x online most likely so If I has to do it over again I would do it the same.
It is also where my dissatisfaction with the local jewelers stems from I asked for an appraisal and all I got was a letterhead with I si1 and the weight on it.
Which is a lot less than I was expecting and less than he made it sound like Id be getting.
Another jeweler I had look at it disagrees with the I rating as do I in comparing it to other diamonds.
It doesn’t matter because the price I paid for it was a bargain even if it is an I and for the money the best I could do is an I-J I2 at the mall so I made out ok.
She loves it and gets compliments on it from her friends and that is all that matters :}
Anyway that’s my story :}

Well strmrdr, thanks for posting your story.

I always kind of wondered what you avatar stood for and what your motto meant at the end for your signoff. Now I know.

Anyway, I really really wanted to thank you for all the advice and help you gave to me in a previous post that I started. You really gave me a lot of excellent sound advice, and I don't know if I really thanked you enough.

Anyway, I found your story very interesting. And like you, I didn't know that there were so much information about diamonds until I started to do some researching on my own. I did not know that I would have such a fascination with diamonds, but I seem to have developed one. I haven't put anything together since my last episode, but I'm sure that when I muster enough courage to do so again then I would contact you and the others for advice. Thank you again for your advice to my situation.

And if any of us posters every have a computer question, could any of us ask you for help?

Just kidding, of course.

Your welcome Jaded Gem :}
Im glad I could help.

There are a lot of people who have helped me learn about diamonds and gemstones here and the best way I can pay them back is too pass it on:}

Anyone is welcome to ask me about computer problems.
There are times when it isnt possible to fix things when not sitting in front of the computer but I will give it a shot :}

I may need to take you up on this offer one day soon.

Strmrdr, we've had a string of storms here in the last 2 weeks. 3 days ago the local news reported an actual "tornado" touched down on the island of Oahu. Not quite with the intensity you'd find in the midwest or the south, but an actual funnel which when it touched down, actually scooped up some red dirt in its path, and some eyewitnesses shared their home videos of it. Odd weather, indeed for Hawaii. Occasionally there are on shore waterspouts here, but I've never heard of an actual tornado here.

waterspouts are neat I saw one on lake michigan once.
It was a small one maybe 50 feet across but it was really neat.
I wish I had a camera with me.
It was on the tailing end of a storm and the sun was shining thru it.
It looked like a million diamonds flying around in a circle in the sky with rainbows flying off from it.

Thank you for mentioning them it brought back an awesome memery :}

Strmrdr,

Do you spend much time around Lake Michigan?? We do have some pretty awesome storms.

No not very often Im about 85 miles or so away.
Every once in a while work ends up dragging me that way.

Strm,

I''m glad I read this. You state your story plainly, but you are anything but plain.

I so much like that you''re a person who goes to massive effort to help others analyze, assess, deliberate and make decisions on this forum without having any vested interest, other than a passion for beauty and proclivity for helping others... Under your brusque and determined exterior beats a generous and sensitive heart. (If I just outed you - oh well!)

It causes me to think - If this were a forum where only trade pros could contribute your voice might be lost, and everyone here would be the poorer for it.

Keep on stormin''

aaawwww shucks John thanks...
