Hi, I have no experience with Diamonds, but am looking to purchase one sometime soon. I've been checking out pricescope and various B&M stores, but needed some advice on whether this is a fair deal...

It is a EGL certified (I know that AGS and GIA certified are more trustworthy and accurate, but I plan to have an independent appraiser examine the diamond and I don't plan on reselling it).

Round Brilliant; VS1; I color --- $31.000
Weight: 3.39 cts
Depth: 61.5%
Table Width: 57%
Crown Height: 15%
Pavilion Depth: 44%
Girdle Thickness: Thin

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Very slight blue

I was wondering if this is considered an "Ideal Cut" as the seller has indicated.
I'm in love with the diamond so as long as it's a fair deal, I want to purchase it.

Thanks so much!

Unfortunately it fall way outside what is considered to be AGS Ideal territory, and even outside GIA excellent. It only scores 4.4 on the HCA, which is only if price is the main criterion.

I would def pass on this stone as it won''t be as sparkly as an ideal cut. You can do a lot better! Have you considered purchasing online? We can suggest some lovely stones if you like.

That price is a worry too. This link will show you a top ideal cut stone, around the 3ct mark, H colour, VS1 clarity - you can see that it's over $72K!!!

Here is another one from GOG

In order to hit the same price range, you will need to drop size, clarity etc. A well cut stone in that size is just a lot more expensive and you really don't want to sacrifice cut. A well cut stone will face up whiter, look bigger and more sparklier than a larger piece of frozen spit

Thank you all so much...everyone here is so helpful and I really appreciate it. I will definitely look for something smaller and better cut within my price range.

Hi Prinkles - sorry to be a party pooper

If you share you budget, maybe we can help you find a killer stone? Good luck, you will find your perfect stone!

No, you''re not a party pooper at all...I really appreciate your honesty! My budget is $30,000 and I was hoping (very wishful thinking) for a 3 carat, well cut stone if possible. I don''t mind if it''s EGL certified. Is this very unrealistic?

Well, I did a quick search on GOG - nothing really comes up in your price range.

WF have quite a few 3ct rocks, although they are mostly in their virtual inventory, which means they are not onsite, they would need to be called in and evaluated in house.

I think if you drop down to the H, I, J colours and try and find an eyclean SI1 or 2, you may just be able to do it, maybe even slightly under the 3ct mark.

You would have to contact WF directly and tell them your budget and what you are aiming for and then let them come up with a few stones to check out. When they are not inhouse, it's too hard for us to pick one, but they will be able to guide you as to which stones warrant further investigation. With that size stone and budget, you just need to be patient I guess and hope the perfect stone comes up.

Have you tried on stones of that size? I was just wondering as it will look quite sizeable on anyone's hands? What about a 2ct stone maybe? You could easily swing that into your budget in a top cut I would say. And what about budget for setting? Does that include settings?

I know it's only 2ct (

I can't believe I am even saying that

) but this looks like a killer stone, great colour clarity combo, and leaves plenty of room for a healthy setting budget. Still a great size rock, but if size really counts then keep looking.

HI:

If I were in your shoes, I would work with a one vendor (any here are great) and tell them your parameters. You''d like a 3 carat stone for 30K if possible--they can search and find you some candidates--choose amongst them the best in cut. There are some great USA EGL stones out there and you could get one!

cheers--Sharon
