A 1ct asscher from GOG measures 5.5mm x 5.6mm and costs ~ $6,700 ( http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3693/ )

A 2 ct asscher from GOG measures 6.7mm x 6.9mm and costs ~ $18,000( http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4997/ )

So, even though the ct weight is doubled, and the price is more than 2.5x higher - all you''re getting is is an extra 1.2mm with the bigger stone?!

I love the asscher cut, and plan on buying one in the near future (probably from GOG), but am I missing something here?

Diamonds get much more expensive as they get bigger - rarity of big natural crystals - as opposed to aquamarine, blue (colourless irradiated) Topaz amethyst etc which come in ton sized crystalss and get sawn into 1000''s.

you get 46.23square mm vs 30.8 sq mm in your example - and alos much more fire.

Diamond prices are not linear...Garry explained it well. Sorry!

I think you're going to experience this phenomenon with any shape of diamond you choose--not just the Asschers.

Example with two round brilliants:

1.01 ct ideal cut H&A G VS2 from GOG = $8187
2.00 ct ideal cut H&A I VS2 from GOG = $22312

The second one is more than twice the price for twice the carat weight, even though the color grade is two grades lower. A larger diamond will always be significantly more expensive because they are rarer; the shape (Asscher vs. round vs. pear, etc.) doesn't account for the difference.

ETA: I was so excited to be able to answer a question that I didn't realize I'd been beaten to the punch! Oops--sorry to be redundant!

You''re getting over 50% more size.

does a comparably cut 2carat asscher look that much bigger than a 1 carat?

Im getting the point as being that the visual size increase is slightly underwhelming considering the big jack up in carat weight and price!!!!!! I also took this as being slightly tongue in cheek!!!!!! Like when my kids start with their.....`snotfair` rants!!!!!!!

To make a season-appropriate analogy: if I''m looking at buying a turkey for Thanksgiving, the difference between a 10lb and 20lb bird is going to seem alot more substantial than going from a 1ct to a 2ct asscher, right?

bgray - Unfortunately, no, I haven''t had the chance to compare the two in real life as no jeweler in my area stocks asschers. Perhaps that would change my mind on this.

Still, when a 1ct round is already 6.4mm x 6.4mm and a 2ct jumps up to 8.1mm x 8.1mm...

It certainly looks somewhat bigger, but ANY asscher isn''t maximized for face up size, that is what rounds or ovals or pears are for! If you want max face up size there isn''t much worse than an asscher sadly.

do you want a square stone? are you SET on an asscher?

rossi-my 3 stone Asscher ring has a 2.01ct center with 1.10ct and 1.06ct sides. Set next to each other, you can see quit a large size difference! But mm size you certainly may get more bang for your buck with a RB, because Asschers are cut deep to draw you into the stone :)

Handshot :) Keep in mind that I wear a size 7 too!

I have to say, going up to 2 cts from 1 in a round is also about a 50% increase in size, the same as your quoted specs on an asscher.

and the rounds cost a lost more than the asscher.

You can work this out on a $ per square mm basis.

Te area of a round is (diameter /2 x diameter/2) x 3.142 - 8.1mm = 51.5 sq mm - so for the example of the GOG stone above this is $33 per square mm

I am also an asscher owner and originally struggled with the spread vs a round diamond...But in the end, those mesmerizing steps hypnotically called to me, and the originality of the asscher cut became more important than size.
(yikes did I just say that!?)

One idea that might solve the size concerns... halo the 1ct and I''m sure it would be as large as the 2ct.

Asschers are not the cut of choice if you are looking for size that''s for sure, but they are beautiful and there aren''t that many out there....

Good Luck!

bgray - Yes, both my gf agree it must be an asscher.

Stepcutnut - Thanks for the pics!

Julie - You''re correct, my point had more to do in overall size. A 2ct asscher gets you 46.23sq mm, whereas a 2ct round is 65.61sq mm.

Gary - Right you are, especially when looking at a H&A rounds. Guess there''s something to be happy about.

As neatfreak said, I''m just going to have to realize that choosing an asscher won''t result in tons of face-up size. Thanks for letting me vent, everyone.

Learning and looking.
You can learn for +30 years like me, or you can find a learned vendor, or you can post your best guesses here and the critics will help - but no one will do your leg work for you :-)

thanks mzzdna -- I don''t think there is a ''secret'' -- I learned everything I know about diamonds from the wonderful people of this site, and all the education provided here. When I was searching, the community here was so helpful, and there is a wealth of information from previous posts. Also, I think that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"... I actually prefer 4-step and 5-step big windmills, and large corners -- but some might not like that look and prefer wider steps and narrow windmills...

Good luck on your search -- there is so much info here to help you...

gh...thanks for the advice. i love the information available on this site! :)

lwd...i remember seeing your asscher and it was beautiful ...can you remind me what the color was? (i think we must have similar tastes as far as asscher looks are concerned!

) also, in a previous post i think you mentioned that you worked with lesley at wf. was she pretty helpful on the asscher front? thanks again!
