. . . what''s the best way to GET RID OF a diamond???
40.gif

I have three diamonds that I want to sell. They are each around half a carat, and they were all given to me by my XH. I don''t want them around AT ALL anymore, so resetting them is not an option. Two of the diamonds are round brilliants (they''re my old studs), and the other is an oval (my old e-ring diamond). None of them are very high quality, but they''re not terrible . . . they do sparkle, just not as much as my new studs and my new e-ring diamond!

I would say the oval is probably slightly higher-quality (and maybe just a touch bigger) than the two rounds. The oval came from Reed''s in 1999 and the rounds came from Zales in 2002. I''m not sure what was paid for the oval, but the studs were about $1,000. I took them to a local jeweler today, and he offered me $300 for all three diamonds. I know they''re not great quality, but I''m wondering if I can do better than that somewhere else? If so, where? Maybe eBay? If I can''t get any more than $300 out of them, I''m OK with that, but I''d like to check into all my options. Any advice?

Thanks, everybody!

Pearlman''s Jewelers! Bill Pearlman and his staff are fantastic. You send them your item (once they say ok), they clean it up, take a picture of it and load it up on their website (once they receive your item, it takes about 7-10 days for it to get on the website). Bill oks a price with you and then once it''s sold, he gets 25% of that and sends you a check. Done and done! www.pearlmansjewelers.com I know a few other pricescopers have consigned items thought Bill, and were very happy with the transaction!

No to eBay for two reasons: people want a great deal and won''t bid up very high AND you have to pay a fee.

Try Craig''s List.

February ~ Thanks! I didn''t know Pearlman''s did that! I''ll definitely look into it!

MC ~ I was going to try to avoid eBay for those very reasons. I''ve seen diamonds just sit on eBay forever and not get even one bid. Ideally, I''d like to get rid of these ASAP, and for as liittle cost to me as possible, and I think eBay probably would not meet either of those goals.

Thanks, guys!

Any other suggestions are still very welcome!

I recently sold a diamond on craiglist. It went well. She paid cash and we met at a jewelers at a mall. Just watch out for all the scammers. I was emailed by many scammers who wanted to wire transfer money to my bank account. Apparently these wire transfers go through so people think they are legit. Later the bank will come after you for the money. On my listing I put cash only. I think is''t a great way to go if you don''t mind weeding through the scammers. Good luck!

Thanks, MMT!

I think CraigsList might be the way to go. I wanted to avoid eBay if possible, for the reasons stated above. I did check the Pearlman''s website, and that might be a possibility too. Thanks again!

Good luck, please come back and let us know how it goes. I know it will help many...

I''ve consigned several items through peralmans and had great experiences! I''ve also sold a couple of ugly estate rings on ebay and that went fairly well too. Paypal makes the process pretty safe, but you do loose a a chunk due to shipping, ebay''s cut, and paypal''s cut.

Kaleigh & Kcoursolle ~ Thanks for the input! I''ll definitely come back to let everyone know how it went!

It looks like I''ll have to get the loose diamond and the pair of studs appraised before I can do anything. Unfortunately, none of the diamonds are certified and they all came from "maul" jewelers. Needless to say, they were all bought long before I found PS!

I know the (approximate) value of the studs I think, but I''m clueless about the loose diamond. I plan to get all three diamonds appraised in the near future. (I think I''ll have to do that regardless if I choose to go with Pearlman''s or CraigsList.) Thanks again, and I''ll definitely keep everyone updated!
