I stopped at a local B&M after work today to talk about settings, and just "put my hands on stuff", literally. I had no intentions of buying anything that day, or from them at all, and especially wasn''t going to buy a diamond, but the talk came up anyway.

Just wanted to see what the forum thought of these figures he gave me for s***s and giggles, laughs, conversational material. Keep in mind I didn''t ask to see the stones or their certs, or get any more info on them because I didn''t intend on buying from a B&M.

All stones below are GIA he says, and he said they are all "an ideal cut", which im assuming he meant by GIA ex or VG.

.80 G VS2 55%tbl $3760
.80 D VS2 57%tbl strong fl. $3,400
.80 G SI1 56%tbl $3,350
.80 H SI1 54%tbl $3,250

Im not sure what he meant by "an ideal cut", maybe he meant "they aren''t horrible" because 54% table seems awfully shallow to me. Keep in mind- I''m not looking for serious feedback, I am NOT considering any of these stones, and am NOT considering purchasing a stone from a B&M. I simply went in to see what was what about settings, and will probably have them build me a custom ring once I buy my diamond.

There is no way anyone could comment on your stones with so little information. You can research vendors'' websites and see for yourself how much the prices can vary.

Oh I know, I wasn''t expecting anyone to grade them, just thought I''d start a discussion.

I''ve seen enough online vendor''s prices to know that these aren''t a deal.

The tables are all fine...
Prices are a bit high. Is that what you're referring too?

What kind of discussion were you looking for? And I don''t think these prices are outrageous enough to make a point of. They are on the higher end of spectrum, but who''s to say the stone in question isn''t?. You didn''t really give enough info to even shop by numbers. For example, do a price comparison (above) on that G/VS2 and you will pull up prices from 2600 to 4100. And all of those tables are fine. 54 percent isn''t "shallow". Smaller tables actually create more fiery stones, if you prefer.
Also, it seemed that you were portraying a bit of negativity towards that B&M, which I would find odd, considering you mentioned getting your setting there, and I imagine the other services of sizing, cleaning, ect., that go along with that. I personally would not want to do business with a place that had prices to "laugh" at and salespeople with "inadequate" terminology.

Yep, 54% is not "shallow". It is referring to the width of the table. 54-57% is what you look for in an ideal cut stone. I don''t find those prices terribly off for a B&M either. You expect them to be a little higher than internet vendors.

i felt the the same way from the OP. almost like aero wanted to start a discussion in bashing this B&M for their stones and their prices.

but in any case, PS is not about that. we''re here to inform, not ridicule.

oh and to answer the original question (not sure if there is one, but i guess this is the answer seeked), the prices don''t seem that bad, esp for a B&M store. usually they run really high, but these prices seem decent.
