So, i got a quote from a reputable dealer in Boston for the following:

1.52ct, G color, S12, pol=vg, sym=vg, GIA cert.

set in a barebones platinum setting (which is tagged $1300)

I really liked the diamond, but the quote for ring and dia was for $11750. I really only wanted to spend
about $9-10K.

What should i do? It was actually the first place i looked at stuff in person, so i''m thinking i should keep shopping around. But i think i can get more bang for the buck online, but i just feel that buying from
a physical store offers me so much more relief.

Any thoughts????

Welcome to Pricescope!

Unfortunately we can't tell much about the all important cut quality of the diamond you are considering, without the following info.

depth %
table%
crown angle
pavilion angle
girdle thickness
diameter measurement
polish and symmetry ( for any other diamonds you may be considering.)
fluorescence if applicable.

The polish and symmetry could be fine, but it depends on the rest of the proportions of the diamond as to how well it will sparkle, it could be a nice stone, but we really need the info above to be able to tell. However as you have seen it and love it then that is a big advantage, but I would recommend you compare it to some diamonds of known cut quality such as Hearts on Fire, or AGS0 cut grade, to see how this diamond compares.

As to buying online, it can take a leap of faith certainly, but many of us have done it with great results and would do so again in a heartbeat! Any of the Pricescope vendors would take excellent care of you, they work very hard to get and keep their reputations! If you prefer to stick with a jeweller then of course that is fine, we can still help you if you can provide the above information and any additonal details you have. Also check any SI clarities carefully that the diamond is eyeclean to your standards, ask if you can check it out away from the store lights - sometimes inclusions aren't visible in some lighting but can pop out in others. Concerning colour, of course that is a personal preference, but you could consider an H colour and still have a very white diamond, or even I and J GIA or AGS graded stones, if you can take a look at some of these colour grades in person as that could help the budget, if the cut is excellent these colours can still look white, we do have many happy Pricescopers with such diamonds!

I would advise taking your time and reading up here, start with the advanced tutorial at the top of the page under knowledge, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! If you want to pursue the above diamond, then get the info above on the proportions, then we can go from there.

Need more info.

RB, princess??
eyeclean?
Did you see it outside of setting?
Measurements - crown/pavillon angles, depth, table, etc.

I would suggest you also consider buying online and follow the great guidance folks on this site can offer. Good luck.

Yeah i don't have exact dimensions but it was from Long's in Boston. He mentioned that cut is the most important thing for any of their diamonds, and that all of there diamonds are of a perfect cut. I saw the actual stone, and then saw it in the setting. It really did look nice. Oh and it is a round cut stone.

Well he is right about cut being so important for a diamond''s beauty, but what consitutes a '' perfect cut'' is highly debatable and a matter of opinion, so you need to evaluate each diamond on it''s own proportions, which we can help you with if you wish.

The table looks good, but it is a bit deep. Try to get the full proportions from the certificate -- this would be much more indicative. After you get them, throw them into the Holloway Cut Advisor (HCA) found under the "Tools" tab under the label "Cut Advisor". This will give you a hint as the to the potential light performance of the stone.

We need the crown and pavilion angles, plus the diameter measurements and girdle thickness to be able to help please.

Light Return Very Good
Fire Very Good
Scintillation Very Good
Spread or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 2.5 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

Rob, thanks for this info..these are results i got. What is the best # to get?

We need the proportions I requested above please. A score of 2 or below is considered desirable with the HCA, if you post the info below then we can get a better idea.

crown angle
pavilion angle
girdle thickness
diameter measurements.

Ok, sorry, so new at this:

Crown Angle: 35%
Pav Angle: 41%
Girdle Thickness: Medium ? Think this is it from GIA..(also one below that on Table that says thick (faceted)
Measurements : 6.9x6.96x4.34

No worries - thanks for the info. Ok, it appears this diamond is around the danger stone as what we call a steep deep, this means the crown and pavilion angles may not be the best combo, the diamond could leak light as a result and not perform as well as it could. I would keep looking personally unless you have seen this one and love it, it has a little more depth than some like to see also.

Here is a cheat sheet for numbers some use here, use it as a guide as some numbers outside these ranges can still work well together, but it will give you a baseline.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!
