I am a 23yr old college guy shopping for an engagement ring. I found one I liked:
1.51 ct
G
VS2
Medium Blue Florescence
Symmetry: Very Good
Polish: Very Good
Depth: 63.6
Table: 56
Crown: 35
Pavilion: 40.8

for $11750

The deal included
Free appraisal
Free setting
Free sizing
$200 credit toward setting

So all in all it was 11750 out the door- No tax because they would mail it to my home address out of state. I thought it was a little high and I wanted to get him to go lower, so I made him a lower offer, and he did not come down at all, so I walked.... was that a bad move? Or was 11750 a great deal?

Thanks

ditto..

is this a round stone? If so, it''s a little deep and you more than likely are loosing some spread so it will look smaller than an ideal cut 1.5 carat. the girdle thickness and dimensions would be helpful, but from just what you posted I don''t think you missed out on super great deal...

I guess yes, I have to say it was a bad move. Especially if you didn''t know if it was a good deal or not. That aside, if you are still able to work with him, I DOUBT he has sold it, and I doubt it was a great deal--based on my experiences with local jewelers. However, if you are buying locally there are a few things you need to get checked. the first one is who decided that this diamond is a G? who did the report? who decided it was a VS2?

If it is not GIA or AGS or one of the others you can list here and we can tell you about (if he did it himself)

Go to a local AGS jeweler (you can find them by following various links on the AGSLAB.com site, go to consumer info and work your way until you get there)
and compare various diamonds that AGS has reports on and determine what colors you are comfortable with. Then look at that diamond and see if you are still comfortable with its color. Then have him show you the inclusions that make it a VS2, then check without the loupe and see if you can still see them, if you can, i say just forget out and keep looking.

See if you can view it in natural light after all of that.

Finally, how did you get those numbers? Tell the people on here where they came from (a report, the machine, whatever you can find out) and then put all of those numbers up here. Then everyone can really offer you some advice in the most important area, the cut. Though at first glance, as others have said, the cut has some good points, and some less than ideal points for a round diamond, but not necessarily a deal breaker.

My recommendation though, is to buy online:)

No, it was probably a good move.

As mrss pointed out, and Julie was alluding to, the depth was a bit too deep, and it most likely faced up smaller than it should have. In that case, you would have been paying for that 1.5 magic number, but would not get the benefits.

Try staying at 62 or below in depth, that should help get a stone that faces up as it should.

UDGUY7665, welcome to the forum.

In additions to the girdle and measurement questions, does it come with a grading report (GIA, EGL, IGI, etc)?

Is the diamond has GIA report, the price looks reasonable (do price comparison for similar diamonds).
