Okay....

I have a 2 ct Asscher- I love it, but have loved two additional settings: the halo and a 3-stone look with traps...

We (my husband-to-be) and I are in grad school now at Penn so money is a tad tight...however, I spent ALL of yesterday at Philly''s jewlers row trying of rings...

I can get a .65cttw halo perfect for my asscher in my price range ($1025) but the kick is that it is in 14kt white gold! My current setting is platinum, so this would be a mental jump for me!

The second setting is a huge money stretch ($1750) and that is with my trade-in of a 7grm platinum mounting (which I would love to keep, and could if I went with the cheaper, but nice, halo)...it is a .45 bullets in platinum...It would take a few weeks to get done, whereas the halo is already made, pretty much fits my diamond and could be done in a day or two...

I know most of you would tell me to wait, probably keep my solid platinum mount, but I just want more sparkle and fast....would it be bad to get the halo in 14kt white gold, keep my platinum mount, and perhaps upgrade in the future to a platinum halo using, perhaps, the same diamonds??!!??

I hope this makes sense to all of you...and I really would love feedback...I would love to know what to do!!!!!

upgrade route sounds like a plan people do it all the time.

also other than a mental thing there is nothing wrong with a 14k wg ring.
You might just decide to keep it long term once ya fall in love with it.

Somebody around here has the phrase..."A deal is only a deal if you get what you want."

I have a couple of thoughts here.

#1 I have no problem with the 14k gold, you get it rerhodiumed periodically and they look smashing!!!
(my wedding band is 14k. it was supposed to be made 18k like the ering, but it was made this way by mistake and I just kept it. They fade at same rate anyhow so it has been of no consequence to me.)

#2 if you would rather the halo but think you may change it again to up it to platinum, I would say wait. If you buy this and lter change, you may just be creating a bigger headache for yourself later. (but i would just keep it white gold.

Thanks for the help...KEEP HELPING!

I think I want the halo, I mean, I LOVE them....I just worry about the "down grading"...in metal-----

I think the price is pretty fair...not a good/bad deal. They did take my diamond out of the platinum mount, set it in the halo for me to view and POP

went the diamond....Blinding!!!!! It just isn''t platinum, and I cannot afford it now (or for a long while) but I can afford the 14kt white gold mounting while keeping my platinum mount just in case I change again :)

I think if you really want platinum, you won't be happy long term with the 14k wg. I was looking at settings last week and was told that 18k wg was a lot better than 14, but I don't remember the reason! I am undecided between the 18k with palladium or platinum, but it sort of depends on what setting I get as to which would be better.

I agree that I might not be happy with the WG for long-term, but to be honest, I am the "upgrade" type...Heck, I check pricescope 10x a day! It is impossible to not want to change your ring (at least for me!!!! and some others on here *I won''t name names*)

Keep the responses coming....I appreciate all of them

On a similar note, my ring is GIA cert. "I" color...I couldn''t help but notice that it looked nice and slightly more "white" or colorless in the halo with the 14kt white gold than in the plain platinum mounting....could any experts chime in as to why?

Just an update....

I woke up today and decided to "downgrade/upgrade" to the white gold halo...It just made my 2ct asscher look so BIG! I will be going in about an hour...Yippy! Plus, I get to keep my original platinum mounting in the event I HATE the white gold...

Hi UCLABelle... just wanted to say my fiance and I are planning on heading down to Jeweler''s Row later today to check out wedding bands... maybe we''ll see you and not even know it!

I think the halo is a great choice... but one thing to consider: I got a 14kt WG setting for a couple reasons... cheaper, more lightweight, less scratch-prone. But my only concern now is that I can''t get a platinum wedding band to go with it. I wanted a wedding band I could leave on all the time... even in the pool... and I''d prefer not to upgrade my band (we''re getting them engraved), so if I eventually switched to a platinum setting, having a WG band would be a problem. Just something to think about!

Ephemery,
I don''t know if this will help you or not, but I wear a 14k white gold ering and shared prong wedding band in 14k white gold/palladium. I also have a 2mm titanium band to match my hubby''s. I think that you can wear it in the pool and no damage. Plus, whether I stay with my white gold or go to platinum later, they don''t do damage to each other. It is also a constant color which is nice. I got the titanium band at eweddingbands.com and cannot say enought good things about them....they were superb! Hope that helps, Mokey

Mokey... thanks for sharing your experience! I have heard some people say that they''ve mixed and matched platinum and gold without a problem, but other people have said the metals will wear on each other and eventually cause damage to both rings.

If titanium would somehow be immune to that... could be an interesting option!

AND, it is as light as a feather!

I understand where you are coming from with this. I too was thinking about resetting my ering and I LOVE halo''s. I''d look at certain designs and they would be soooooo much cheaper in white gold. More in my price range than anything in platinum would be. However my current set is in platinum but you do have that feeling of "downgrading", however I think thats just the mentality we''ve made ourselves to feel. I''ve read a lot of +''s and -''s about both metals. For instance I know i''ll never need to get my plat set redipped but it does scratch all to hell. I don''t think it is a downgrade really, especially if it makes you happy!

Sounds like it will be beautiful! I am also in Philly, can I ask what jeweler you will be using? FI and I will be looking for somewhere on jeweler''s row to get our wedding bands.

Yeah!!! I am glad you are going for the Halo, Belle!!!!!

Can''t wait to see pics, and at least you have the platinum setting....incidentally, if you do, I know someone who would gladly take your halo setting (points to self) hehehehe

We had my e-ring set at Barsky and had a good experience there. I think some of the salespeople there are definitely better than others though! They have a TON of rings to try on, just to get ideas... so definitely worth checking out. AND they let me take pix, which was nice... not all places would.

This is because white gold has a slight yellow tint to the metal, whereas platinum doesn''t. This helps to hide any warmth in the diamond it is said.

I think your halo is going to look great! I can''t wait to see it!!

can''t wait!!!! HOw does it look???!!!!

Hello Everyone!

I will get pics up ASAP! I love it so much and wouldn''t have done it different! I did go to Barsky''s!!!! Nice people, good jeweler....Put it in double prongs too!!! Yippy!

I love the "pop" factor missing from the diamond in the previous setting...

Pics to come!

So exciting!!! Can''t wait to see.

Still working on the pics everyone!

Ephemery1- I noticed you posted in Kaleigh''s topic about UPenn and me (UCLABelle)...What school are you at? I am getting my second masters at GSE, living with my husband-to-be in Samson (also at GSE)...I work at CGS (kinda by Drexel)...Pehaps we can grab drinks if you still go to Penn?

So, my loving husband-to-be noticed today that I seemed blue...After one day, I realized I hated the new setting. It was beautiful, but just too flashy for my simple plain personality...so he took it back to a jeweler to have my diamond put back in platinum. Now we have a .50ct 14kt white gold beautiful halo that cost over $1100.00 and have no way of getting rid of it (perhaps for $200 on ebay?!)....SUCH A BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD DAY!

Never ever in my wildest dreams will I EVER switch my diamond out of that mounting again...........NEVER!

SO YOu took it out already???
Don''t you think you should have given it a little longer?

Can you return the setting since you just bought it from them? You shouldn''t have to be stuck with it, I think.

I am so sorrry to hear you weren''t happy, but it seems to me that since you weren''t happy with the solitaire after wearing it for awhile, then ultimately, I think you are going to be looking for something else...

Sorry to hear of your bad day...

Update:

The store refunded the money after a few complaints I had (the halo was a tad skewed, the ring was set WAY too high and one prong was already chipped)....of course I didn't walk in and say "I hate this now after one day". I learned my lesson though, and at least they worked with me. I then took my loose diamond and old mounting to a nearby jewlery repair shop and had it set...So, I guess I am still on the lookout for a setting...

I just wanted to say hi, I started a thread asking how you were enjoying Penn in Hangout but you didn''t see it. Hope all is well with you. Good luck with your project. Lisa

Didn''t you just say you would never take it out of the mounting again?

Lisa- I did see it very late (wasn't on Pricescope for a while due to some family issues)...but I did respond a few days ago! I love Penn

and Philly!

Jelly- I did say I never want to take it out....but most of us on Pricescope know how that goes :)
