Hi there, I am in the market for an engagement ring for my gf. I have a question on this particular stone I saw. Please advise. The stone looks great, very clean, the issue is a very thick rated girdle. Here are the info on it.

1.51 carat, SI1, I
Cut: good
Polish: very good
Sym: good

7.24-7.30X4.46mm

Girdle is rated medium to very thick, 6%

Everything else is really great to this stone. In comparison, the I color is really pushing G color, perhaps it's due to the girdle? Please help, if this is a steal, I wanna get on it!

Who graded the stone?

I wouldn't buy a good cut stone for an engagement ring. Is the 1.5 carat size making you have to go down to a good cut?

Not a great stone if it is only good cut. Definitely not a steal at any price unless they were giving it away and it could be recut into a nice 1.25 ct. stone. We only recommend GIA Excellent cut because it is a very broad range and some diamonds even in that category we would not recommend. And I color does not look like G, although if it has fluorescence it might look whiter than an I usually would. And the depth makes it look smaller than a 1.5 ct. should. A 1.5 should be at least 7.4mm. You'd be better off buying an excellent cut 1.4 and it'll look about the same size as that.

Look for GIA Execellent cut and at least very good on polish and symmetry. That's the minimum.

Is the stone you're looking at GIA graded?

The stone was graded by GIA. The size isn't the reason for the grade. Just a stone the jeweler showed me. It is really remarkably clean. I was wondering if the girdle and the lower cut grade is a deal breaker.

No I was just asking if the 1.5 was a size you had to have and were having to step down to a good cut to find one in your budget.

Yes, the "good" cut would definitely be a deal breaker for most on this site. You would be better off dropping the size a little so you could get an excellent cut.

If you post your budget and minimum requirements the people here love finding diamonds. You'll probably end up with something much more stunning even if it is a little smaller.

Well looks like the search continues. I'm looking for a 1.5 or above. Hopefully within the G-I color range. I'm really also hoping to stay within 12k with the setting and everything done. I hope that's possible. So af it looks like the sto e will run about 10k...if anyone can help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks again for the advice

As long as you get a simple setting, these are examples of ideal/excellent cut 1.5 ct. I SI1's. And I will say that several I found that are excellent cut are just under 7.4mm, but just be aware that the larger the diameter, the larger the appearance of the stone as long as they are all ideal/excellent cut.

James Allen has some, too. They provide less info on the stones but they will provide idealscope images on up to three stones:

I was working on my list while farmergal posted hers, so there are some duplicates, maybe!

farmergal, I am thinking this one is a wrong link? Not one we'd normally recommend...

When it comes to lab reports good actually = bad. :o I personally think it's misleading to many consumers. There are going to be issues with this stone. We can't tell you what they are specifically based on the information that you gave us, but if you were to post the report # we could give you more information. As DS said, we recommend staying with GIA EX or AGS ideal and staying far far away from EGL in most cases. There are even some GIA ex that we would not recommend.

I'm fine with an SI clarity and color as low as I or J for an engagement ring, some maybe wouldn't go below an I, but if budget was a concern and I really wanted a larger stone I may even drop to a K, depending on how color sensitive you/she is. An eye clean SI is a great value, you just need to search a bit harder, although there have been a lot of good ones lately.

But cut is going to be the most important aspect of the diamonds beauty, not color, not clarity, not size. The cut of the stone is what give the stone it's amazing performance, makes it bright and sparkle. A great cut can even make the diamond appear whiter and brighter than it's stated color. I'd take a J SI with a great cut over a D IF with a poor cut any day. The diamond with the better cut will always be more beautiful and pleasing to the eye.

There is definitely alot of fat in the girdle area and it will look small for the weight. With the dimensions of 7.24-7.30X4.46mm. A well cut 1.50 ct. is closer to the 7.5 mm range.

Thanks for all the help guys, looks like the search is still on. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of excellent cuts. If anyone sees anything that can point me int he right direction, it would be appreciated. I am looking for 1.5+ carat, willing to go to SI2 as long as i can't see it with the naked eye, color, hopefully int he GHI range.
