My husband and I will be married 5 years (and 2 babies later!) in March, and we're planning to upgrade my diamond, keeping my original setting. I would really love at least a carat. Our jeweler said I have a Stuller Red Box diamond with papers (no idea what that means), and that I can trade it in and upgrade. I currently have an AGS, .861 princess cut, that's VVS2, H colored, 5.45 x 5.15 x 3.67 mm, the depth is 61.0%, table is 75%, the girdle is thin to medium, the polish is very good, symmetry excellent, and no fluorescence. I truly don't know what a lot of this means. I am really tall and have size 7 fingers, and want more finger coverage. I am thinking of going down a bit in clarity and maybe even a step in color, to get a princess that's a carat or a little bigger. Then- I noticed ovals are less expensive per carat, and look great on long fingers like mine, but I don't want to do a halo, and I wonder if an oval would even look good with my setting? I have bead set pave, and then a bead set pave band on each side. Thoughts, opinions, help? I want to maximize finger coverage, without having any obvious color or inclusions, and don't have a giant budget, but we can spend $1-2k above the trade in value for a bigger stone.

I've attached a photo of my set. Thanks for any help! :-)

They will have to change the head of your ring to accommodate a larger stone, so technically you could change shape. A round or oval would give you a larger size appearance. I think any shape diamond would go with your setting. I honestly do not see much to be gained to go from a .86 to a 1.0 ct princess. That just isn't enough difference to be worth doing, in my opinion. So if you really want another princess cut, I would wait until you can do around 1.2 cts. There is such a thing as AGS Ideal cut princess stones, and that would be a very safe way to get a great stone. I wouldn't go below I color in princess cuts because you may start seeing some of the tint. H is probably better. I would also say H or maybe I color for an oval, and definitely I color for a round. Rounds tend to mask color better because some other shapes tend to concentrate color in certain areas because of the cut.

Thanks! I think I'm leaning toward a 1.1 or 1.2 oval.

Ovals are beautiful outside of a halo.

I'll throw one idea out as you mentioned wanting finger coverage. Marquise. Had you considered them? They have a similar feel to ovals AND princesses because of there elongated shape and pointy ends. Plus they face up very large and are cheaper per CTW than many stones.

If you've already considered that ignore me, I love the oval idea too :)

Thank you! I did consider one, but that's what my sister has! I'm really loving the oval idea, although a little scared since all the "rules" about an oval are so different.

How about a pear, they face up huge?

I love the pear or the oval!

There are some beautiful ovals out there! I love that idea! FYI some other posts on here have warned of a bow-tie effect that bothers some. I am also in process of upgrading and considered oval too but decided to stick to my original shape (round). Good luck! Sounds exciting!

I vote for an oval too. It will give you more size for your upgrade and look lovely with your rings.

Since you're considering other shapes - I vote Emerald! Would look lovely on your long fingers!

Another vote for oval! I think it would look beautiful with your current setting and provide you that finger coverage you are looking for!

Thanks, everyone! I am so excited to go see some ovals in person, and will probably check out some additional shapes too. There's just something about an oval though...I can't get the shape out of my mind! I love the oval ring posted in a comment above- so beautiful!

Just throwing this one in. A rose cut diamond like Jennifer Annistan has would have a great spread. The stone only consists of a large dome crown with nothing below the girdle. I saw one that was supposed to look like a half carat but was third carat weight.

Wonder what the weight of Annistan's ring is, it looks huge. Ofcourse the look is not for everyone, it is an old looking cut in the
same way an OEC or old mine cut is. Some have said they are see through but apparently that is not the case if the dome is high
enough. They are supposed to look great in candlelight with all those triangle shaped facets glinting different colors.

I also vote oval! Please report back after viewing the stones. It will be interesting to see what you think after seeing them on your finger. The one Yorkgirl posted reminds me of Blake Lively's ring.

I love an oval and it will be so different from you first stone. Just make sure it is well cut and not cut for the face up. IMHO, the more elongated and narrow ovals are not as pretty as the more chubby ovals.

I like the fatter ones too--closer to 1.3 ratio than 1.5. I'm having my jeweler pull some!
