Help With This Oval From Ebay...

Hi!
I'm new here I'm shopping around for a ring/diamond and am glad I chanced upon this site! I've heard so many nightmare stories about scams on ebay etc therefore I need some advice... Has anyone bought from 5th Ave Jewels (on ebay) before...? I was looking at one of their ovals (I just LOVE the setting!) I really love the setting/casing but the diamond looked quite yellow for a 'g'... I sent them an email asking for more details of the oval diamond eg. certs etc but they told me that the diamond is not certified... What do you guys think...? Thanks!

Their description (let me know if i'm not allowed to do this & I will remove it)...

"This stunning diamond engagement ring is handmade in platinum and features one fine oval cut diamond in tbe center, G-color, SI clarity, weighing 2.26ct and 86 fine, full cut round diamonds, G-color, VS clarity, weighing .60ct, for a total of 2.86 ct. The round diamonds are pave set on all sides of the center diamond. The oval diamond is set in 4 platinum prongs. On the prongs, there are 4 fine diamonds set there also. The details in this ring are so beautiful. The way the diamonds encircle the diamond in the center, with the fine milgrain edges on the band, makes this ring extra special.
The oval diamond measures 9.55 x 7.31 x 4.75mm. The ring is a size 6 1/2 and can be adjusted."

I think ebay+ not certed stone=trouble.

Sorry. There are just too many scary stories (check the search box) about people buying diamonds on ebay. I wouldn''t.
 
Welcome to PS.

Many are the reasons why I would pass on this deal, also I can see what looks like a large inclusion at 6 o' clock. Use the search tool and you will find many experiences from posters who have used Ebay.....Have a look at the online vendors under Resources, many of these guys can find you a stunning oval without worry. Also although ovals do show more tint than a round, this looks very warm to me for a G.
 
I don't know anything about ebay, but, I can tell you that that stone is going to have a wicked bow tie. It will appear nearly black through the middle.

ETA: I looked at the pic again. No way is that stone a G. It could be the picture, but, I think I'd pass on this one. If you use the search tool I think a few threads will come up regarding 5th ave. jewels.
 
Ebay is really difficult to buy from and not get scammed. Ladykemma might have some good advice for you since she seems to know the good sellers from the bad, but I haven't seen her posting here in a while.

Here's what I would do: set this oval (or either of the other 2 larger ovals on GOG if your budget allows) in this setting for a nearly exact replica!

I know what you mean... Sigh... I read in some of the previous threads that 5th Ave Jewels were quite trust worthy...??

I really like the setting... I asked them if they would just sell the setting/casing and they replied that they would sell it for $2800...

I have about 2-3 months to find a ring/diamond... I actually do like the cushion cuts very much... and the Radiant Cuts.... and the Ovals.... As you can see... I''m totally confused cos every time I decide on a cut, I jus find another different cut that looks gorgeous on the net or in mags etc... Sigh!

Vs1-Vs2 or SI1 (eye clean close-up)
Budget= $13,000 - $15,000

Wonder if that''s possible?

Yep, I think your project is totally possible for your budget. I''d investigate other vendors that carry a similar setting or have one custom made if you can''t find anything just perfect.

They''re starting under $9000. That leaves plenty for your setting.
 
I wouldn''t do it. The stone doesn''t look like a G, there is a large bowtie, a big inclusion, and lacks a good report. It''s just not worth it to risk all of that money.

If you want a big stone, but can''t afford it now. Go for a high quality well cut stone from a vendor with an upgrade policy like Whiteflash.com, jamesallen.com, goodoldgold.com, engagementringsdirect.com, etc.
 
I did check pricescope etc... Guess if I want a diamond with really good specs it looks like it will still be at least $15000++... If possible I would like to keep to a budget of $13000! What type of diamond and size are you looking for? Maybe we can help.
 
I would pick a vendor or two to work with and have them source what you are looking for. I''d check with Engagement Rings Direct or Whiteflash. Whiteflash has a great upgrade policy. I wish DH would''ve bought my stone from there because about two months after he got it for me I wanted a larger one. The B & M store he purchased from has one, but, it''s not in writing. I guess it depends on their mood that day LOL!

With a stone graded by the GIA or AGS, could probably easily drop down to an H in color and have it still look white and bright even for a fancy and you might want to consider some SI2''s on a case by case basis b/c some can be eye clean or able to be covered up by a prong. I''m afraid I don''t know much about cushions or ovals, but I''ll check out any deals I can find for big stones for the money.
 
I know all of these aren''t exactly what you have in mind, but here are some stones that I saw that might interest you:

Here is a lovely 2+ carat round. Yes, it''s I/SI2, but well-cut rounds I colored are very white. It looks clean except a small feather that might be able to be covered by a prong. With the pricescope discount it would be about 15k. This radiant is slightly deeper than I would like, but it still looks very promising and is well under 15k with the ps discount:

This F/VS2 oval is beautiful and in the price range, and although it''s 1.75cts, remember that ovals look bigger than other cuts of the same carat weight:

I LOVE cut-cornered squares! This would be pretty similar to a radiant, but in my opinion, a lot more sparkly and beautiful.

Lorelei is quite right - there is large inclusion at 18:00, making it an SI2 or even I1 stone. The setting is absolutely beautiful and any diamond would like great set. Try www.abazias.com for really well-priced diamonds. They are by far the cheapest in the States for quality. Try to stay away from the EGL-Israel certs. If you must, then always go for 1-2 clarities and colours higher than you want to be certain you get what you want.

Yup quali_boy you guys are definately right... Although I''m no expert in diamonds, I could tell that there was something going on inside the diamond, just couldn''t figure out if it was the lighting or some reflection/shadow etc. You guys are really experts! Maybe I should ask them if they could set it with a GIA certified diamond... But then again, the price will definately shoot sky high!
