I''m not sure if it fits with the first type of song you''re looking for, but "Thin Line" by Jurassic 5 is about 2 friends who''ve know each other for a long time and have feelings for each other, but are scared to cross the line and ruin their friendship.

Wow, so many great options! Thanks guys!

I should have mentioned that I wanted songs where I could find a music video or something online, so that eliminated some of the suggestions

Also, to seem cool, I wanted to try and find modern music too

I have to at least pretend to be young I guess.

The ones that I think fit the bill the best are Peter Paul and Mary, "For lovin'' me". Perfect example of someone who is afraid to commit and perhaps has avoidant attachment

Also Kelly Clarkson "because of you" for someone afraid to be in relationships because of fear of getting hurt.

Lots of other great suggestions for songa about relationships, but I don''t think they exactly reflect the consctucs I want to illustrate. I actually would love more suggestions if anyone has more... I''d love to find a few examples of each construct if I can.

but cool class DD! How is it being back at work?
I love being back at work! I was off for almost a year and while I love my son, I LOOOOOOVE being back at work! It helps that I am *finally* in the job I trained for 11 years to do. I love being a prof, it rocks. Anyways, Hunter is happy in daycare and I am very happy being at work and missing him a little as opposed to being home and feeling lonely and bored much of the time. I see him at lunch for about 45 minutes to nurse him and play, so it is a good compromise for us I think.

Did someone already suggest "I am a Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel?

I know you want something current but this seems perfect for avoidant attachment....

I know you've picked some buttttt these are some good relationship songs :D

The Perfect Drug- Nine Inch Nails

Hate Me- Blue October

F*@k You Lucy- Atmosphere (NOT school appropriate)

ANYTHING on The Postal Service- "Give Up" album.. (Clark Gable, We Will Become Silhouettes,..)

That''s mine. I came up with, "For Lovln'' Me" by Peter, Paul, and Mary. I didn''t write it or sing it or anything, but I found it. I mean, I thought about it first and then went looking for it. That was my idea. So I won. If this was a contest at least, I would have won.

I know you are teaching a university class about psychology, Dreamer. What is your background? What is, "work"? Is it full-time teaching?

dd, that''s an awesome idea for your class -- you must be one hip professor! :)

Can''t seem to come up with any suggestions that aren''t already made here though.

I think Kelly Clarkson wrote that song "Because of You" about her relationship with her parents, not a romantic partner, if that affects the project at all. I read somewhere that she came up with it when she was a teenager and they were divorcing.

Haha, and I gave your old stuff specifically because you asked for lyrics.

For lyrics about relationships, I just immediately think of The Great American Songbook, WWII big band, Tin Pan Alley, and the lounge singer torch songs. The newer lyrics tend to be vague and childish, or not very brainy, or else just written to make a rhyme. The show tunes and big band and lounge stuff was written to much a higher standard, as adult fare. I'd make the kiddies listen to at least one vintage piece, so much the better if they make faces and sqirm in their seats. The baby boomers were not typically deep thinkers, and the rappers and hiphops are even more lightweight in the intellectual property department.

I have one from a cool/hip band 'cause I'm a cool/hip kid

It's from Deathcab for Cutie - "A Diamond and a Tether"

I'm not entirely sure you can find a video for this one because it wasn't a single, but it's such a good song! Here are the lyrics:

Pity, take pity on me
Because I'm not half the man that I should be
I'm always turning to run
From the people I should not be afraid of
And darling, you should know
That I have fantasies about being alone
It's like love is a lesson
That I can't learn
So I make the same mistakes at each familiar turn
I know you can't hold out forever
Waiting on a diamond and a tether
From a boy who won't swim
But who will dip his toe in
Just to keep you here with him
I've got this habit I abhor
When we go out, I'm always watching the door
As if there's someone I'm going to see
Who could out-do the things that you do to me
I know you can't hold out forever
Waiting on a diamond and a tether
From a boy who won't fly
But who will take to the skies
If he thinks that you're about to say goodbye
Pity, take pity on me
Because I'm not half the man that I should be
And I don't blame you, you've had enough
With all these empty promises and countless bluffs
I know you can't hold out forever
Waiting on a diamond and a tether
From a boy who won't jump
When he falls in love
He just stands with his toes on the edge
And he waits for it to disappear again

I''m a professor at a Canadian university, in a psychology department. I teach 4 courses a year and the rest of the time I supervise graduate students, honours students, and run my own research. This is my first position after 6 years of graduate school and two years as a research fellow, so I am *very* happy to have it. Especially in this economic climate, it was a long time to land a tenure track position. Only 5 in my field in my country in the last 3 years! So I am thanking my lucky stars.

LOL! Touche! I too like the older music, but I think they would roll their eyes and fall asleep if I push it too far. I think Peter, Paul, and Mary may be as far as I can get.

Yes, it fits though because attachment forms from our relationships with our parents and then gets translated/projected onto our romantic relationships! I think that she is blaming her parents for her inability to open up within relationships, which works well for fearful attachment style.

The old Eddy Arnold song that has been covered a million times, "You Don''t Know Me". I know you mentioned wanting something current, but it''s been covered a million times. Michael Buble is pretty popular with all age groups and did a cover.

"You give your hand to me
Then you say hello
I can hardly speak
My heart is beating so
And anyone can tell
You think you know me well
But you don''t know me

No, you don''t know the one
Who dreams of you at night
And longs to kiss your lips
And longs to hold you tight
Oh I''m just a friend
That''s all I''ve ever been
''Cause you don''t know me"
