Long time reader, new poster:

I am about to purchase this diamond online: First Time online for me.: http://www.eternitybyyoni.com/diamond_detail.php?id=1791913
GIA: 2161289430

1.42 carat round E, IF 61.1% Depth 56% Excellent GIA cut, HCA 0.7 Ideal Symmetry, Ideal Polish and No Fluorescence for 22828 ( 16114) per carat.

This is prob a dumb question: But how do I figure out the fire and brilliance of this round cut?
Is this a good diamond to go for?
Any experiences with Eternity by Yoni?

The first question is: why such high color and clarity? Is there a particular cultural reason for this?

Stones with VS2 (and sometimes SI1) clarity will appear identical to the naked eye, when compared with an IF clarity stone. The only reason you would want to pay the premium for the clarity is if you come from a culture that places a high value on this characteristic.

Otherwise, dropping to F/G color and VS2/SI1 clarity will provide you with a lot more stone for your money!

Im nervous about online purchase and therefore think that maxing out color and clarity will provide some protection in purchasing without viewing.

Purchasing GIA graded stones is what gives you the reassurance when purchasing online. If GIA grades a stone VS2 or better in clarity, it is almost certainly eye clean and free of durability issues. Their color grading is equally reliable. You should easily be able to drop in both color and clarity without worries as Rocky suggested.

You just need to find a vendor that you feel comfortable partnering with.

Here are 4 vendors that I have first-hand experience with, and provide reliable products with a solid guarantee:

Good Old Gold
Whiteflash
High Performance Diamonds
Brian Gavin Diamonds

I would suggest browsing the sites and looking for the vendor that has the setting you're after. From there, reach out to them with your budget and preferences and they will help you find something very high-quality that works (or feel free to post your preferences here and some folks will give you suggestions).

It might be worth your time to visit a local store, just to compare GIA colors. See an H-colored stone and see if the body tint bothers you. For many, it does not bother them and you can get more stone (or an upgraded setting) this way. Otherwise, sticking with F/G color should be safe.

When a vendor provides a GIA report for a diamond at the time of purchase how do you know that you are actually getting that diamond? Lets be honest, do you all independently appraise internet purchases?

You should NEVER EVER NEVER NEVER EVER purchase without viewing. You will probably have to pay up front to have the diamond shipped to you, or better yet, an independent appraiser who can receive and share the diamond with you, most likely without you having to pay first if he is a known appraiser to the vendor. Still, you should have, in writing, a 100% right of return and FULL refund if you end up not keeping the diamond.

Since you are paying up front, be sure to google the vendor to see if they have any complaints of not honoring the return policy. Still, you do not actually complete the purchase until after you have seen the diamond, WITH YOUR EYES and determined that you love it more than the money that you paid for it!

Wink, Who believes you must see it!

I have a really nice jeweler who was happy to verify my internet purchase under his microscope with me. I am getting my setting from him. But yes, I also had an independent appraisal done. If you get the diamond, play around with it in different environments, and love it, then I would take it to a good independent appraiser. It will give you peace of mind that the stone you love is indeed what it's supposed to be and is money well spent.

Hi aausman-
I have only purchased one diamond on line and I too was a bit uneasy at first sending that much money away and not seeing the stone in real life first.
You have been given a lot of good advice from the previous posters.

Make sure you can send the diamond back for a 100% refund w/ if it doesn't meet w/ your standards.
Chose a vendor w/ a stellar reputation. Rockey R listed some excellent options.

w/ the price of the stone you posted you could get some gorgeous  sparklers for less if you change some of your parameters

for example:
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3075971.htm
http://www.winkjones.com/index.php?page=view-id-diamond-infinity-new&id=1397
http://www.winkjones.com/index.php?page=view-id-diamond-infinity-new&id=1485

And yes, I took it to an independent appraiser which helped for insurance purposes.

You all are giving great advice. I have been lurking around here for many months and really see myself getting into diamonds as a hobby. I am using Eternity Diamond by Yoni. They were listed on the PriceScope Search and other forum members spoke well of him.
The website states they do have a return policy.

I think I am going still going to go with the high quality diamond that I listed. I already have enough chest hair and not enough on top of my head. Not looking to go through shipping and handling of a 20000K diamond with a mail carrier in case I don't like it? Seems reasonable...

High clarity or color does not equate to "high quality". Some of the superideal stones posted here would be what I would consider high quality, superbly cut stones. If you buy a superideal from Wink (High Performance Diamonds), Whiteflash, Brian Gavin, or Good Old Gold in the VS clarity range, you don't have to worry about a thing. Even SI clarity if they confirm it is eye clean (their word is going to be accurate as they have built reputations they mean to keep). If I were in your shoes, I would absolutely go with a superideal over spending a bunch of money for IF clarity that you will never be able to appreciate vesus any other eye clean diamond. I also wouldn't go that high in color unless you know that the wearer is color sensitive.

Having said all of that, it is completely up to you and if that's how you decide to spend your money that is your decision.
