Help with pricing a diamond

Hi! I have a friend selling her loose 1.02 diamond solitaire. I don't want to underpay or overpay her so I need your help.

What should I offer to pay for this particular diamond? It's beautiful in person, although I'm in no way a diamond expert.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think that sounds about right as I'm looking at that same size, but H or I with a slightly lower clarity, Excellent or Very Good GIA graded cut (which I don't recall seeing on your report, and that is important if you can add that to your info), no Fluorescence, and mostly Excellent Polish and Symmetry and they are about $4-$5K. Yours is a G with better clarity. But the cut info is important so add that if you can.

I'm fairly new to this forum so there will likely be a more expert opinion coming your way. But, again, at a quick glance and comparison, that seems about right. Did you know you could do a diamond search on this forum? You should do that, too, with the characteristics of your friend's stone.

Crown and pavilion angles?

Based on info given, closer to $6 then $8K.

The GIA report is dated July 2000 and doesn't include the cut grade or crown and pavilion angles.

Is there any way to obtain those without a new GIA report?

I'm currently in possession of both the diamond and GIA report until I decide what to do/what price to pay.

Plus I'd like to resell it eventually and upgrade to a larger/different diamond in the future.

Also, I was told the strong blue fluorescence wasn't a factor in a G color diamond - only in the D,E,F color range.

Is that incorrect?

It's a factor no matter the colour. Typically it is a beneficial factor with a lower colour (I and worse) as the blue contrasts with yellow to make to diamond appear whiter.

Generally speaking it is known the fluorescence, especially strong blue, is a negative factor for a diamond to possess as it may make the diamond look milky under UV light.

This one actually has better polish and symmetry and is selling for $6,300 (and is not a resale).

Because the diamond is loose, I believe that if you can find an independent appraiser with a SARIN or other measurement system they can provide these angles for you and further evaluate the cut. Depending on your location, that may cost almost as much as getting a new report, but something to think about. ETA: i seem to recall that some appraisers may do this as part of a paper-match evaluation, ie measure the diamond to determine if it matches the cert. that can be cheaper than a full appraisal.

My sense is that even with some of the super-ideal items seen on PS, resales look at a markdown of at least 20-30%. If you're going to pay the same as retail, whats the point? You might as well get exactly what you want if you're going to pay that much, or at least buy something where you know exactly what you're getting. Otherwise when you go to resell, you won't know what is a fair asking price. I know this is a friend, but what are the chances you'll be able to sell to another friend at original retail?? Why should you be the only one to take a hit on the resale market? Just sayin.

Where's the best place to sell it? Craigslist, Ebay, etc.

Also, what's the lowest you would sell it for? I'm guessing $5000 would be a fair price?
