I came here when i researched the hell of my now wife's diamons so i had to come back when i had a question. I did try to find a more appropriate location for this question but didnt find it so i thought i could ask here.

it's not to do with the diamond but more the settings.

my fiance has the platinum Tacori HT2510, we love the setting. BUT... within the first month she wore it while bowling, i know, stupid, what's worst is she never ever bowls but she's left handed so the ring was destroyed. it completely caved in. it was insures so no worries, replaced.

now a year later, her ring is starting to bend. it's only getting worst so eventually we'll bring it back and if it needs to be replaced again it will. but what can be done to avoid this? i mean she stopped sleeping with her ring and now takes it off for everything but still bends.

any thoughts? suggestion?

People misunderstand the properties of platinum. It is very soft, about as soft as 18 karat yellow gold.
Punch a bunch of holes in it and set diamonds and it becomes "perforated", and will bend under any sort of moderate stress. Decades ago I worked all night setting pave' diamonds into a set of Cartier rolling rings only to have one of them collapse under the force of the setting work. A total loss and no sleep.
I was shocked, but after studying why this had happened my resolve was to reject platinum for these types of settings as it is not a good material when used to make eternity rings of minimal width/thickness or when diamonds are stuffed into surfaces of structural elements.
Couples who want fine engagement rings or bands need to consider that their platinum mounts either need to be babied, or that another alloy needs to be considered. My vote is with the latter.

If platinum is a must, then go for wider, thicker mountings that will stand up to daily wear. Isn't daily wear the intention?

Is it one of the crescent mountings by chance? When I was looking for new rings 5 years ago, two jewelers told me that they were either discontinuing Tacori or the advised against the crescent ones due to them being too fragile. People lost tiny stones out of them all the time and the would dent easily. My advice is to switch to a different style platinum setting. Tacori has settings with solid shanks, for example.

I just looked up the ring and it is gorgeous, but those open sides are going to be trouble. We have some people with similar style custom made rings on here, and perhaps you might consider that next time instead of Tacori. This one with milgrain added would be perfect:

What are some of the stronger alloys? Iridium added in I presume?
