Help With Picking one of These Two.

In an earlier post I came across a diamond I liked a lot and everyone here said it was a good deal and to go for it. The Jeweler that i am going through to get the setting mentioned that he had a diamond that was recut because it had a chip in it. Originally it was over a carat, maybe a carat and a half. It is now .97. the specs on it are very nice but I''m just not sure if it''s worth the extra $1000 for what seems to be one color grade higher and .07 in weight. I''m no expert but maybe there is more to it that I''m missing. What do you think? (it''s the second stone) No ideal scope for the second stone.

I would stick with the first one personally.

If the price of diamond #2 is $4724 ($1000 more than diamond #1) and the color grade of diamond #2 is G, then both diamonds are good values. The decision really comes down to what “value” the higher color has to you.

We often see AGS graded diamonds that are priced below similar GIA graded diamonds will be low in their color grade or even a true color grade lower than GIA grading. If diamond #1 is at the low end of the H and diamond #2 is a solid or high G color, the color grades might be noticeable but you still have to determine if that is worth the price difference. It does not matter so much whether the prices are good for the diamonds as much as where your budget is for the diamond. If you said the difference was $100 or even $500 difference, it might be an easier call than with the $1000 price difference.

I find this interesting, as AGS are along with GIA considered to be extremely accurate with their grading...You say you often see AGS graded diamonds that are off with their colour grade, can you give us some actual examples of this please?

I think it is rare, but we have seen a couple of AGS stones on here grade a color lower by an appraiser. Harriet''s is one I clearly recall. But I seriously wouldn''t worry about that. I have bought AGS stones and did not even have an extra appraisal done.

If the second stone was not quite so deep, I''d go ahead and choose it. But since it is a little deeper, it isn''t that much bigger visually than the first stone. However, the second stone is a great value since it is just under a carat and G VS1.

I''d say it is a toss up but up to you whether the .97 is really within your budget.

Thanks DiamondSeeker. I definitely agree it is a great value. Had i seen it first i would have jumped on it. But in comparison to the other stone I wasn''t sure the extra 1000 was really doable/ans wise especially since the 2nd stone didn''t seem to be far superior. Like I said had I seen it first I might have been able to budget a little better for it at the time.

my Brit GF....i think it is true with my wife''s stones.
her H color GIA stone is more closer to a G.
her I color AGS stone is more closer to a J,but the clarity is more closer to a VS1 than the VS2 as it shown on the old AGS report.
