First off thanks to all of you at pricewatch for the education I have gotten lurking in these forums. I really feel like I got a fantastic ring on my very limited budget because of all of you. So, I have a wonderful ring being Crafted by Vatche, i have a beautiful girlfriend just waiting to be asked, and a Niagara getaway planned for our anniversary (in may).

I have never been to Niagara, but I am certain that there are plenty of wonderfully romantic places/ways i could propose. So far people have sudggested doing it during a helicopter ride (sounds awfully noisy) and on the Maid of the Mist right as it approaches the falls (I have a horrible fear of a jet of water knocking the ring out of my hand and into the river). So any particular times/places/ways anybody might suggest are welcome.

Again I know nothing about the area, and can afford maybe $1000 for the whole weekend.

I would nix both the helicopter ride and the maid of the mist...for both of the reasons you noted.

Just down the road from the Falls is an amazing Butterfly Conservatory. It's gorgeous, warm, quiet and peaceful, and really romantic!

That sounds excellent. If not the conservatory I''m sure i can find something perfect somewhere along the park trail. I was thinking of finding a nice quite spot overlooking the falls when they are all lit up at night, but perhaps thats a bad idea, I suppose diamonds don''t sparkle much in the dark. How would you feel about during a carriage ride? Beyond that, any suggestions for dinner? I''m pretty hopeless at romance, but I want everything to be perfect for her.

My boyfriend and I went to Niagara last year in April and the prettiest spot we found was a small town called Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 15 or 20 minutes from Niagara Falls itself. The drive to it is absolutely enchanting (you pass something like 8 wineries, if you like that sort of thing it could be another thing to do) and the town itself so beautifully charming it looks like a movie set. We went for dinner and had an amazingly good meal, but it would be a lovely place to propose too if you wanted something a little off the beaten track. It''s just beautiful.

Sounds excellent, she loves wineries! Do you remember the name of the restaurant?

I don't offhand, but I am looking through the restaurants in the town to see if any of them look familiar. My boyfriend is British, and we chose that restaurant because one of the items on the menu that was posted outside (on the main street of the town) had Yorkshire pudding along with a roast. My boyfriend ended up getting the steak there, and he said it was one of the best steaks he's ever had in his life, and coming from him, that's really saying something.

The place that jumps out as the star of the town is a place called the Prince of Wales Hotel. Here's a link to a little information about it, showing a picture of the horse & carriage rides they do there too. It really is that pretty! I want to go back sometime.

Here's a link directly to the Prince of Wales Hotel and to its dining rooms/restaurants. Looks very pricey, but if you wanted to celebrate your engagement, might be a good excuse to go someplace so nice? Dunno, but here's a link in case you want to check it out: http://www.vintage-hotels.com/niagara-on-the-lake/dining.php

Here's another link that has a list of the wineries in the area at the bottom: http://honeymoons.about.com/od/niagarafalls/a/NOTL.htm

I'll keep looking for the restaurant name, but honestly, there are a bunch that look awesome. I think you'll be ok regardless, if you do a little investigating beforehand!
