Hi Guys, my dh purchased a large princess diamond for me. Its on a take it or leave it basis!!! He has a jewellery shop so its there in his stock for me or not. He is a very unemotional guy. LOL. But, he never gets insulted or holds on to a fight....and we have been together for over 20 years, and I no longer get offended by him either!!!

The thing is, the diamond is not cut well and I may not have chosen it myself as per the advice here. He was very quick to purchase this though as he probably wanted to never hear about this shrinkage thing again, so went for size mainly.

So now I get to set this big Mumma.....4 carats of ave. cut princess. Its a tiny bit rectangle also.....9.32 * 8.84 * 6.21!!!

Would it be vulgar of me to halo set it making it 15mm * 15mm? Would that look rediculously large? I would love to add some extra sparkle by having very good quality pave around this diamond to lift it up!!!!

Is it possible to not have suare edges on the halo, ie soften the corners???

Has anyone ever made a ring of this size??

I havent decided if this will be an er or a rhr or a dress ring for sometimes.

Lastly, in his defence, the diamond does not look cloudy or like frozen spit. To a layman it looks like a normal diamond and is a good white color. It looks like crap from the side, so Im stuck with not exposing below the girdle.( And fwiw, he does things like this all the time. He is also into diy handyman work/ renovating which gives me no end of grief!!!)

Any comments appreciated.

HI:

Congrats on your new stone.

I have a radiant (5.01) set with two taps (1.12 ctw) and altho I have never had it measured precisely, I would estimate from trap to trap it is app. 16mm wide. I have a 6.25 size finger (large hands but longish fingers) and the my ring covers a lot of finger real estate.

I know you are in the beginning stages of planning a setting; but I wonder if you have tried on any or many different types--to give you an idea of what you like and what would look good on your hand. I ask b/c what we think we''d like and what we end up with are often two different different animals! I know for my anniversary upgrade, I went looking for another RB solitaire, and ended up with a radiant with side stones!

BTW, you might look at the SMTR ongoing thread, there are some wonderful rings to give you an idea. Have you places near by that can offer you a selection of rings to try on? What about the vendor your DH bought your stone from?\

cheers--Sharon

Thank you Sharon, from one to another!!!!

The vender is my husband, and he has a no return no upgrade policy!

I am hoping that I will love my diamond for being what ever it is, and I hope it looks more than its cut specs.

To be honest, I rarely see big sparkly diamonds on people. Most people I know have very average diamonds to say the least. Some of the richest people I know dont wear any bling.....and yes, it makes you wonder!!!!! LOL On another topic, even those people with small diamonds, who insist that they traded size for quality are usually wearing very average diamonds!!!!

So with my ring, I dont really have much to base it on. I dont see huge diamonds very often even in stores, and I certainly havent seen any princess cuts in my size.

I have literally poured over every picture ever posted on this site, and I have seen some beauties for sure.

I was really hoping to find out what others suggest for my shape and size. I was thinking of treating it like an emerald, or would it look too tizzy??

Anyway, I would love to see a hand shot of yours!!!
Regards Sharon

ps. would sometime tell me how to quote another post? Or where to read about this?

Well, first of all, can you get a different stone or is it all or nothing? Second, have you thought about sapphire sides? Maybe half moons or traps with some pave below the sides? Just another option to a halo. Check out Leon Mege''s site. He has photos of some mongo stones there in many different settings. Do you know the specs of your stone?

Yes, Leon has some gorgeous bling......I could just stare for ages!!!

And my diamond is definately paid for!!! Mind you, I let many go before this and in the end my dh just got sick of looking.

Because we were always shopping with champagne tastes and beer budget, we were always aware that we were looking at the bottom of the barel so to speak. Even so along the way I had lots of fun.

I trialed many diamonds of different shapes , sizes and cuts from emerald to oval to round to square!!! There is not a day that I dont second guess myself about the ones I gave up...especially the emerald which was 3 carats and presented as really well cut, flawless and very white. But everyone around me said that the lack of sparkle was something I would end up missing....and that it is oldfashioned for my age??? Plus, it was already set and I would have had to pay for the unwanted setting.....never mind too late to go back!!!!!

I did innitially choose a wonderful princess that was even better priced than this one, but my Mum wanted it so I let her take it. It has scrubbed up extreemly well considering its ave. specs and looks very blingy in her setting. She did corner rubbed in and pave band, very simple.

I will keep you all updated and post pictures when I can!

.......anyway Sharon, does your husband have access to any/many settings? Have you seen something you "really" like? Of course Leon is a benchmark for asthetics and quality......

Since you asked, here is a rather recent thread that includes hand pictures of my ER--and lots of chat in between

Wow Sharon, your ring is exactly what I would LOVE!!!!! Its so classy and blingy. The one problem is that my dh doesnt want to spend any more on big side diamonds, which Im guessing are around 1 carat each??? Very small diamonds are not expensive, so he doesnt care (as much) how many I need.

But to be honest, your ring is exactly what my taste is and I love it!!!!

I love your eternity ring too, it looks to me like there are heart shapes between the diamonds.

And the girls are right....you do have a great figure to go with the bling!!!!!!

Would you mind sharing about your diamonds sizes. Also, did you go for cut and really get into it like many of the experts here???

I just want to say, my diamond could have cost up to $100,000 or more if it was all that....even 2 carat diamonds could cost that much.....so if I was going for size, I didnt expect to get all the c`s in top condition.

Sufice to say that my true wish would have been a 5 carat D, IF (any shape....Im easy to please!!!) top cut etc as the good lord intended diamonds to be worn!!!!!! But my husband had other ideas!!!!
29.gif

I would love to see more of your ring. Do you still love it the same???

ps....Anyone with over 4500 posts in a diamond forum has to be my type without an issue. I can just tell!!!!!

HI Sharon:

The size of my center stone os 5.01 (VS1, H color) and the side are .56 x 2--1.12 ctw (I color). Platinum setting. I believe the sides are proportionate and I would not go larger. Thiing is, I bought this ring completed. The center stone had been lab certified, and after assembly, the entire ring was sent to an independent appraiser.

As for going for "cut" there are not strict guidelines for many fancy cuts as there are for round brilliants. (AGS parameters for Princess cuts is relatively new). So much of what you want in a fancy is determined by your eyes. Yes, David Atlas as some cut charts on his site (Gem Appraisers), and I referred to them.

I concur with you that in an alternative universe where budget were not a limitiation, I would like a D IF center stone too; that said, I know my ring is not "perfect", but rather perfect for me. I still love it as much as when I saw it the first time and it made my heart pound. My DH--who generally eshews jewellery--commented the other day how much it sparkled and that it truely was a "beautiful ring".. A convert perhaps?

ETA: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/the-fire-thread.51563/ There are a couple of pictures of my ring in Ellens fire thread.

cheers--Sharon

Thanks a million...I have really enjoyed your ring!!!!

And fwiw, my analogy sort of fell on its face when you do actually have a 5 carat!!!! And for the record.....I wouldnt think twice about the D, IF thing.....that was me trying to be humerous....Your ring is everything then some, and I can feel the pleasure from right here in Australia!!!!

Im feeling better about my crappy cut because I still think the stone looks pretty enough.....at the very worst it reminds me of an ec, but its definately not!!! It doesnt have any frozen spit about it, and its very clean and bright looking. I will look into side stones under half carat each because that is not so bad cost wise.

I think I will also set my rb 1.27 c. which is a much better quality.....hmmm the fun never ends.

Plus Im in the market for a high end watch with some diamond markers or other bling!!! I also love the antique diamond watches.......

If I were to have something that large and wanted a halo, I would do something like this Leon Mege halo on a LARGE stone.
Thanks for the suggestion. Its so nice of you to take time out to post a picture for me!!! I am really behind with knowing how to post. But its getting to the point that I have to learn, Im missing out on too much fun.

I love what you have suggested. And I will even go as far as to say......that so leaves my stone for dead!!!!

I love the soft angles of that stone and the vulgar size!!!!...its sooooo me

Im hoping with my setting, the halo will soften the look of the princess edges. Im going to tweek the halo so it sort of resembles a radient shape.

My h. has sent out some designs to both local and interstate setters who he thinks will do a nice job. Im surprised he is really getting into it. Im really surprised he is letting me add more diamonds etc as this is very out of character for him. It was only 6 months ago that he said swore I was not going to get a diamond at all!!! So Im amazed that Im getting this large one and he is letting me get a fancy setting......maybe I should call a doctor!!! Hmmmm

I would hold off on that call until your diamond is set and on your finger.

To post links, copy the page addy (highlight it and click CTRL+C) then in the box you type in to post here, click the button with the world+chain, type in what you want to call the link, click ok, then in the addy window, click CTRL+V to paste the addy.

I have seen a of halos with softened (like a cushion) or clipped (like a radiant) corners with various diamond centers not always following the shape of the cushion. I love Leon''s rings and his halos are stunning! Another one to check out is Maytal Hannah.

Have you looked at Simon G rings? They''re beautiful! I tried this one on and it''s gorgeous!

Beaudry does a lot in "vulgar" sizes lol, and Pearlman's carries a lot of them.

46B13.jpg

Sera...that is very vulgar....i likey!!!!
36.gif

How was it trying it on in the flesh!!!! How brilliant.

And you are soooo right, Im jumping the gun with giving my h. credit for the ring......he could still be stringing me along as its taking forever for him to get it organised.

But even still, I cant believe he is going along with it so nicely. Hmmm maybe he`s forgetting that he doesnt usually like to give me things that will make every female in his family jealous!!! (Lots of family politics...) The boy is growing up maybe!!! LOL

Seriously, Im nervous to comition a ring that I have no way of trying on. I am literally printing pictures from this site and hoping that it will look great irl. I wont know if it suits me until I get it...if that day ever comes!!
36.gif

I found one picture with halo and side diamonds....it was very nice to say the least. Im not sure if these rings look fancy in a daggy/ tacky way or amazing. Sometimes less is more, but I cant seem to control my desire for `more`. I hope I dont feel embarrest wearing it if it is too showy.
