...and last, as far as engagement rings are concerned!

I have been studying all I can on the topic of diamonds, and have read a great deal on this site as a lurker. First of all, thank you all so much for the valuable information and resource this site provides--much appreciated!

My question:
I was referred by a good friend to a dealer on 47th Street to find the stone for my girlfriend''s engagement ring. Can anyone be of help to me in determining if the following stone is a good choice and fairly priced? If priced too high, any suggestion on value and what I should try to negotiate for?

Specs:

Radiant cut
1.27 carats
D Color
VS1 Clarity
Excellent Polish
VG Symmetry
No Fluorescence
7.50mm x 6.05mm x 3.38mm
Table 67%
Depth 56%
GIA Certified

Asking price $10,000 (loose stone)

The diamond is shallow and from above looks bigger than it really is, carat-wise. Is the depth of the stone too shallow?

Thanks!

Hey Boyscout...

I couldn''t find an option close to those characteristics, but I did find one...

not too far away
at a dealer close to you
for slightly less $
with a great rep here
known to be uniquely equipped to identify only those diamonds that perform really well
and I can be at ease directing him to what you want.

Otherwise...without reflector images, no proportion data seems to help us know whether a described option would perform well or not.

Best wishes, and welcome to Pricescope!

Definitely too shallow, 3A class cut from the AGA cut charts. Probably will not perform well.

And too expensive.

This GOG stone is 1.94c G VS2 at 8980 wire price. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4996/
I do not know how to judge radiant cut but GOG has a good name and most of their stones perform very well. They are based in Long Island so you can even drop in on them with an appointment.

Ira, you are faster than me... :P

What are the issues with too shallow a depth? The stone seems to have a lot of brilliance. Also, what price/carat should I be aiming for, assuming D color, VS1 clarity and EX polish VG sym?

Boyscout...

I see Stone gave you the link documenting possible problems with your stone. I think the AGA charts he pointed you to are less about performance, and more about reasonableness in targets, with performance being included in the metric. With a focus on performance, having the reflector image...like from ASET (do a search) will help us help you.

Otherwise...do a search up top on "Pricescope your Diamond." A quick search came up with only 2 comparables...slightly lower in quality/size...but..also at half the cost or less.

Regards,
